No fluff in the intro today! I want to quickly talk about a few things from this edition of Steam Next Fest, how I’ll approach the next one, and, most importantly…

The second edition of the Golden Demos [and its English debut]!

The Numbers

This time around, I downloaded 117 demos during the festival — four more than in the February festival, eight fewer than my personal record. This is one of the things I’ll be rethinking for the next edition, in October: unless something changes, I’ll probably try to drastically cut the number of demos I download.

Even half of what I’m used to downloading is already a lot, and honestly, playing 100+ demos drains me way more than it needs to. As much as I love getting such an extensive look at the state of the indie/AA scene and discovering new ideas, there’s no reason to do it this excessively.

In theory, if I can cut it down to around 60 demos, like I did in the early editions before I posted here, I’ll be able to spread my time out more, give each game more attention, and think more carefully about each one.

As I mentioned in the last closing post, I don’t play every demo to the end — when I feel like I’ve already gotten the gist, or when it’s clear a game isn’t going to do it for me, I stop. A lot of that comes down to maximizing my time and fitting in more games, but it can also mean I miss important details about some of them — and that’s worth thinking about.

Obviously, to cut the numbers down that much, I’ll need to be even more selective about what I download. Fortunately, the curation my fellow Substack writers do will help me keep an eye out for interesting demos.

Trends

This topic annoys me, so I’ll try not to say much about it… And inevitably fail.

Next Fest, and by extension Steam, is packed with AI slop. It’s a broader internet problem, so maybe it’s unavoidable… But the sheer amount of demos drowning in AI content was genuinely depressing.

For those who don’t know me as well: I’m strongly against AI in creative processes. There’s nuance, yes, and I think certain contexts deserve consideration. I don’t think it’s fair to crucify a small developer for using AI to do a first-pass translation of their game, or for maybe using these tools to optimize internal development processes — after all, we all know that at this point, big companies are already forcing these tools down the throats of their production pipelines.

That said, as both an artist and a consumer, I find the inclusion of AI elements in the final product unacceptable. Art, text, whatever it is — I think it’s disrespectful and shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to create something artistically.

Am I laying down rules unnecessarily? Yeah, maybe. But as I’ve said before, this is my space, and therefore my prerogative. I’m not completely inflexible about this, and I think fighting against it too hard would be like banging my head against a wall — but for now, I think it’s worth stating. Feel free to comment or send me a message to discuss it, or just to tell me off.

On a positive note, several of the games mentioned throughout the last few posts included sections or artwork emphasizing that they didn’t use AI. Sentimental as I am, I thought that was pretty cool.

The Golden Demos

Did this section do well last time? No, not really. Nothing here does well, I suppose. But we do it because we love it! Welcome to the second edition of the Golden Demos, the biggest and most relevant award for demos played by Raphael at Steam Next Fest! Winners will take home an incredible Lil Golden Nugget.

But first — there's something new! The Lil Golden Nugget has a new look! In my eternal quest to at least minimally support [local] artist, I hired a friend to give it a redesign. Follow the talented Be Bueno to see more of her spooky artwork. Behold the new Lil Golden Nugget in all its glory!

I’ll explain that it has horns because demos. Demons. Ha, I’m a genius.

Anyway, on to the categories (all different from last edition):

Category: "Didn't Play The Whole Thing Cause I Want To Be Surprised"

I already don’t usually play demos all the way through, but narrative-focused games give me even less reason to do so. Not that I have some strict no-spoilers policy, but it’s kind of annoying to know too much about a story before you can get completely immersed in it — so it’s a little tricky to dive too deep into these demos, knowing the progress will eventually get cut off.

But among all the narrative games that drew me in, one of them got me in every sense. And the Lil Nugget goes to…

Sovereign Tower!

Sovereign Tower is a visual novel with a beautiful aesthetic and fun kingdom and knight management gameplay. But the focus here is on the narrative — specifically the dialogue and the resolution of its many missions. So, you know how it is: the more of the demo you play, the more mission resolutions and little jokes you’ll have already seen. Better to hold back!

I have no idea how long the final game will be, but I’m genuinely excited to dive headfirst into it.

Category “Best Game I Want to 100% Already”

Just like with demos, it’s not that common for me to go after 100% completion in a game, whether in terms of content or achievements. When we were in peak Silksong hype and my friends followed their playthroughs into full 100% runs — achievements and all — I was in shock at the dedication. If the game is short, sure… But in a long game of that scale? Madness.

Obviously that comes down to how I do things, jumping between several different media in a short span of time. A “commitment” of 10–15 extra hours to hit 100% in a game is, in many cases, something I see as 10–15 fewer hours playing another game or doing literally anything else.

But some games are so enjoyable that they pull me in, and at least for now, there was one demo at Next Fest that I think will be one of my next 100% runs. And the Lil Nugget goes to…

Well Dweller!

At this point, many readers are probably convinced I have a bias against Team Cherry games. After all, I’m always mentioning and criticizing them. But I’ll say it again: they’re great games! That said, if there’s one thing Kyle Thompson, developer of Well Dweller and other great metroidvanias, knows how to do, it’s making a relatively short, accessible, and extremely enjoyable game.

While chasing 100% in the aforementioned games pulls an average of nearly 20 extra hours from the player, Thompson’s games ask for fewer than five. I’m a fan!

Category “Best Way To Deal With Trauma”

Dealing with frustration through violence is awesome. No, wait, that sounds wrong and excessively masculine. Uh, dealing with frustration through virtual violence is awesome. Is that better? I can’t really tell.

Seriously, though: some games have such delightful gameplay that the whole thing turns into an impromptu therapy session — you’re the protagonist and each action carries a cathartic weight. And the Lil Nugget goes to…

Virtue and a Sledgehammer!

Rarely in my life has a game felt so insanely directed towards being cathartic. In specific moments? Sure. But throughout the entire demo, every sledgehammer blow I landed felt like my soul being washed clean by the supposedly justified wave of violence from the protagonist. The fact that the story — predictable as it may seem — is presented in a stylish and enjoyable way only helps.

Category “Best Game I Want To Lose Myself In”

Is this category our edition’s equivalent of Best Picture? Maybe, maybe not. There are so many demos, so many different games of such varying quality, that I’m not keen on making that kind of value judgment.

But it’s inevitable that there’s always going to be one game that haunts me from the moment I finish playing it, making me want nothing more than for it to release so I can obsess over it. And the Lil Nugget goes to…

Sting & Swing!

Sting & Swing is a simple game — you’re a bee guiding a golf ball through beautiful pixel art environments, hitting holes and discovering secrets. I’m not sure I can say with certainty that this is my favorite game of the edition. But I’ll describe how I feel about it with an anecdote.

This year, I decided to copy a few other writers and record short clips to include in my articles. Out of laziness, I used Steam’s recording system for this, going through the automatic recordings after each game and looking for interesting clips and screenshots.

The problem with using Steam’s system is that, to keep my storage from stressing out too much, it’s set to retain only 60 minutes at a time — meaning that if I forget to check the recording after a game and spend too much time in the next one, each additional minute records over the previous content.

Being the aloof person I am, this happened once during the Next Fest — I played through the entire Sting & Swing demo and innocently forgot to select clips before moving on. I only realized after testing five more demos, which had completely recorded over the footage.

So I had two options: use images from the Steam page, or play again to get clips. As you can see in the article linked below, the game has clips. I enjoyed the demo so much that I happily completed it again.

If that doesn’t say something about the game’s quality, I don’t know what would.

Once again, it was a pleasure navigating the waters of Steam Next Fest. I just hope the next edition has less AI slop and that I can be a little kinder to myself when exploring it.

And I’m also just now remembering that last edition, I was excited to start the new Resident Evil after the festival. Now, unfortunately, there are no new releases waiting for me… But at least I’ll have more time to watch the World Cup and keep reading The Expanse.

Sem firula na introdução hoje! Quero falar rapidamente sobre algumas questões dessa edição da Steam Next Fest, como irei abordar a próxima edição e, o mais importante…

A segunda edição d’Os Demos de Ouro!

Os números

Dessa vez, baixei 117 demos no festival — quatro a mais do que no festival de fevereiro, oito a menos do que meu recorde. Essa é uma das coisas que vou repensar para a próxima edição, em outubro: a menos que algo mude, provavelmente tentarei reduzir drasticamente o número de demos que baixo.

Até metade do número que estou acostumado a baixar já é muito e, sinceramente, jogar 100+ demos me drena muito mais do que o necessário. Por mais que adore ver o estado da cena indie/AA e descobrir novas ideias, não tem porque fazer isso de forma tão excessiva.

Em tese, conseguindo restringir para umas 60 demos, como fazia nas primeiras edições, conseguirei espaçar muito mais meu tempo, dar mais atenção para cada jogo e também pensar melhor sobre cada um.

Como falei no último post de fechamento, eu não jogo toda demo até o final — quando sinto que já peguei a moral da questão ou quando já vi que o jogo não vai em agradar, paro de jogar. Muito disso é em prol de maximizar o tempo e conseguir jogar mais jogos, mas isso também pode fazer com que eu perca detalhes importantes sobre alguns jogos — e vale refletir sobre isso.

Lógico que, para conseguir reduzir tanto assim os números, terei que ser ainda mais criterioso quanto ao que baixar. Felizmente, a curadoria que meus colegas aqui do Substack fazem vai me ajudar a ficar de olho em demos interessantes.

Tendências

Esse assunto me irrita, então vou tentar não falar muito sobre isso e, inevitavelmente, falhar.

A Next Fest e, por consequência, a Steam, está lotada de porcariada de IA. Esse é um problema em geral da internet, então talvez seja inevitável… Mas a quantidade infeliz de demos lotadas de IA me entristeceram muito.

Para quem não me conhece tão bem, sou muito contra IA nesses processos criativos. Há uma nuance, sim, e acredito que certos contextos merecem ser levados em consideração. Não acho justo crucificar um desenvolvedor pequeno por utilizar IA para fazer uma primeira tradução para seus jogos nem por talvez utilizar essas ferramentas para otimizar os processos internos de desenvolvimento — afinal, todos sabemos que, nessa altura do campeonato, as grandes empresas já estão empurrando essas ferramentas goela abaixa das linhas de produção.

Dito isso, enquanto artista e consumidor, acho inadmissível a inclusão de elementos de IA no produto final. Arte, texto, seja o que for: acho um desrespeito e uma falta de entendimento com todo o processo de criar algo artisticamente.

Estou cagando regra desnecessariamente? Sim, talvez. Mas, como já falei em outras ocasiões, esse é o meu espaço e, portanto, é a minha prerrogativa. Não sou inflexível nesse sentido e acho que lutar excessivamente contra isso seria como dar murro em ponta de faca — mas, por enquanto, acho válido. Sintam-se livres para comentar ou mandar mensagens para discutir sobre ou para me xingar.

Num ponto positivo sobre isso, vários dos jogos mencionados ao longo dos últimos posts incluíam seções ou artes enfatizando que eles não fizeram uso de IA. Piegas como sou, achei bem legal.

Os Demos de Ouro

Essa seção fez sucesso da última vez? Não, na verdade, não. Nada aqui faz sucesso. Mas a gente faz porque gosta e só! Bem-vindos à segunda edição d’Os Demos de Ouro, a maior e mais relevante premiação de demos jogadas pelo Raphael na Steam Next Fest! Os vencedores levarão um incrível Pepitinho de Ouro.

Enfim, vamos às categorias (que são todas diferentes da última edição):

Categoria “Não Joguei Tudo Porque Quis Me Surpreender”

Tá que eu já não costumo jogar todas as demos até o final, mas esses jogos com foco na narrativa me desincentivam ainda mais a isso. Não que eu tenha uma daquelas políticas 100% anti-spoilers, mas é meio chato saber muito sobre uma história antes de conseguir ficar completamente imerso nela — então é meio complicado me jogar tanto nessas demos, sabendo que eventualmente o progresso será cortado.

Mas, dentre todos os jogos narrativos que me cativaram, um deles me pegou em todos os sentidos. E o Pepitinho vai para…

Sovereign Tower!

Sovereign Tower é uma visual novel com uma estética linda e uma jogabilidade bacana de gerenciamento de reino e cavaleiros. Mas, o foco aqui está na narrativa e, mais especificamente, no diálogo e na conclusão das várias missões. Então, é aquela coisa, né? Quanto mais da demo for jogada, mais resoluções de missões e piadocas terei visto. Melhor evitar!

Não sei o quão longo o jogo final vai ser, mas estou bem animado para poder me jogar de cabeça nele.

Categoria “Melhor Jogo Que Quero Fazer 100% Logo”

Assim como nas demos, não é tão comum que eu vá atrás de fazer 100% num jogo, seja no conteúdo ou nos achievements. Quando estávamos no hype do Silksong e meus amigos emenderam suas jogatinas numa busca de completar 100% do jogo e até de pegar os outros achievements, fiquei em choque com o empenho deles. Se o jogo é curto, até vai… Mas num jogo longo, daquela magnitude? Loucura.

Lógico que isso vai muito do meu funcionamento, transitando entre várias mídias e afins diferentes num curto espaço de tempo. Um “comprometimento” de mais 10-15 horas para pegar 100% em um jogo é, em muitos casos, algo que vejo como 10-15 horas a menos jogando outro jogo ou fazendo qualquer outra coisa que seja.

Mas alguns jogos são tão gostosinhos que me cativam e, ao menos por enquanto, teve uma demo na Next Fest que acho que vai ser um dos meus próximos 100%. E o Pepitinho vai para…

Well Dweller!

Nesse ponto, muitos leitores devem estar certos que tenho um preconceito com os jogos da Team Cherry. Afinal, estou sempre mencionando e criticando eles. Mas, reitero: são jogos ótimos! Mas se tem algo que o Kyle Thompson, desenvolvedor de Well Dweller e outros ótimos metroidvanias, sabe fazer, é um jogo relativamente curto, acessível e extremamente agradável de jogar.

Enquanto a busca pelos 100% nos jogos supracitados puxa quase 20 horas a mais do jogador em média, os jogos de Thompson requisitam menos de cinco horas a mais. Sou fã!

Categoria “Melhor Forma de Lidar Com Traumas”

É bom demais lidar com frustração com violência. Não, pera, isso soou errado e excessivamente masculino. Uh, é ótimo lidar com frustração com violência virtual! Isso tá melhor? Não sei dizer.

Mas falando sério: alguns jogos têm uma jogabilidade tão agradável que viram quase uma terapia — você é o protagonista, e cada ação carrega um peso catártico. E o Pepitinho vai para…

Virtue and a Sledgehammer!

Poucas vezes em minha vida um jogo parecia tão insanamente direcionado para ser catártico. Em alguns momentos específicos? Claro. Mas durante toda a duração da demo, cada marretada que dava no ambiente era como se minha alma fosse lavada pela onda de violência supostamente justificada da protagonista. O fato de que a história, por mais previsível que pareça ser, ser apresentada de uma forma estilosa e agradável, só ajuda.

Categoria “Melhor Jogo No Qual Quero Me Perder Logo”

Essa categoria é nosso equivalente da edição ao Melhor Filme? Talvez sim, talvez não. São tantas demos, tantos jogos diferentes e de qualidades tão variadas, que não gosto muito de fazer esse julgamento de valor.

Mas é inevitável que sempre vai ter algum jogo que irá me assombrar a partir do momento que terminar de jogá-lo, desejando apenas que ele lance logo para poder me debruçar obsessivamente sobre ele. E o Pepitinho vai para…

Sting & Swing!

Sting & Swing é um jogo simples, você é uma abelha guiando uma bola de golfe por belos ambientes de pixel art, acertando buracos e descobrindo segredos. Não sei dizer com certeza se esse é meu jogo favorito dessa edição. Mas irei dizer como me sinto quanto a ela com uma anedota.

Esse ano, resolvi copiar um pouco outros escritores e gravar pequenos clipes para incluir nos artigos. Na preguiça, usei o sistema de gravação da Steam para isso, vasculhando a gravação automática da jogatina após cada jogo, buscando clipes e imagens interessantes.

O problema de usar o sistema da Steam é que, para não estressar tanto meu armazenamento, ele está configurado para reter apenas 60 minutos por vez — isso quer dizer que, se eu esquecer de olhar a gravação após um jogo e passar dessa duração em outro jogo, cada minuto a mais vai gravando por cima.

Como sou cabeçudo, isso aconteceu uma vez durante a Next Fest — joguei a demo inteira de Sting & Swing e, inocentemente, esqueci de selecionar os clipes antes de ir jogar outra coisa. Percebi isso apenas após testar outras cinco demos, gravando completamente por cima do conteúdo.

Aí me vi com duas opções: usar imagens da página da Steam ou jogar de novo para gravar clipes. Como podem ver no artigo linkado abaixo, o jogo está com clipes — gostei tanto do conteúdo da demo que completei ela novamente, com gosto.

Se isso não quer dizer que o jogo tem uma qualidade, não sei o que diria.

Novamente, foi um prazer navegar esses mares da Steam Next Fest novamente. Espero apenas que a próxima edição tenha menos porcariada de IA e que eu consiga ser mais gentil comigo mesmo ao explorá-la.

Aliás, tô lembrando aqui que, na última edição, estava animado para começar o Resident Evil novo após o festival. Agora, infelizmente, não tenho nenhum lançamento novo para começar… Mas pelo menos vou ter mais tempo para assistir a Copa do Mundo e continuar lendo The Expanse.

Nossa, ontem foi um dia bem cansativo. Não que tenha sido chato, muito pelo contrário — mas encontros sociais sempre me drenam muito. A bateria esgota de uma forma complicada.

Aí, no fim, quando cheguei em casa, não tive muita energia para sequer pensar sobre testar os últimos jogos baixados e, muito menos, escrever sobre eles.

Cá estamos hoje, então! O último dia da Next Fest, as últimas demos, o penúltimo post sobre essa edição. Pera, penúltimo? Vai ter outro? Ah não…

PHASE ZERO

Quando selecionei PHASE ZERO para baixar, uma olhada rápida pela página da Steam me levou a crer que era um jogo de survival horror 100% sério, sem muita personalidade no que é descrito lá.

Aí, a abertura acima me fez rir tanto que comecei a pensar que talvez o jogo fosse meio satírico. Então joguei um pouco mais e vi que era, sim, um survival horror sério — no sentido que é um jogo feito seriamente — e sem fugir da veia humorística absurdista que muitos jogos do gênero tem. Afinal, não dá para falar de Resident Evil sem mencionar os diálogos cafonas, as cenas elaboradas de ação e afins.

Propositalmente ou não, muitas situações da demo me trouxeram uma risada sincera, como a sala com uma máquina de ressonância magnética — o que ia acontecer era incrivelmente telegrafado? Sim, mas ainda achei incrível.

Um dos pontos que mais gostei do jogo foi começar direto com uma shotgun. Tipo, pistolas e facas são legais e tal, mas pô, todos ficamos ansiosos nesses jogos pelo momento de pegar a famosa 12. Poder usar ela do comecinho é algo bem agradável!

Ter um inventário separado para itens de puzzles e afins também resolve alguns problemas de movimentação que esses jogos costumam ter. Mas, faço a ressalva que acho preferível que o jogo proponha uma forma de mitigar um inventário limitado e apertado do que simplesmente remover esse elemento.

Umas das minhas coisas favoritas em jogos do gênero é fazer rotas mentais, contemplando o que preciso levar comigo em cada saída de exploração pelos ambientes dos jogos — a possível falta desse elemento, talvez buscando enfatizar um pouco mais o lado de ação do jogo, gera um sentimento misto.

PHASE ZERO também faz uso de uma coisa um tanto quanto defasada hoje em dia: ângulos estáticos para a câmera. Como alguém que trabalha com fotografia, esse elemento sempre foi um dos meus favoritos em clássicos como Resident Evil e Dino Crisis. Adicionar essa faceta da perspectiva de cada cena, possibilitando aos desenvolvedores ilustrar cada pedaço do ambiente de forma que ele evoque o necessário para cada situação.

A ação em si é perfeitamente ok: com o disponível na demo, não consigo opinar muito. Mas o resto me agradou bastante e, se os desenvolvedores forem capazes de manter esse lado absurdista que tanto me agrada, provavelmente será um bom jogo para o cânone dos survival horrors indie.

Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart

Bati o olho em Rizz Dungeon e jurei que era um jogo pornográfico. Assim, nada contra, sabe? Até conheço alguns! Mas não é bem o que busco abordar por aqui e, por conta disso, quase passei reto pelo jogo.

Felizmente, a arte extremamente charmosa chamou minha atenção, dei mais do que alguns segundos de atenção e percebi a falta da etiqueta de “conteúdo sexual”. Olhando mais, vi que se tratava de um dungeon crawler [lit. explorador de masmorras], um gênero que gosto muito mais do que conheço — com experiência limitada em Etrian Odyssey (Atlus, pelo amor, faz OITO ANOS), Shin Megami Tensei, Wizardry e alguns outros poucos — e não tive como não dar uma chance.

E estou bem feliz que o fiz!

Rizz Dungeon te vê controlando Taffy, uma fraca, porém, charmosa moça, perseguindo sua ex-maligna que roubou seus pertences. Quem nunca, né? (Eu. Eu nunca.)

O problema é que, como toda boa masmorra, o ambiente está absolutamente lotado de monstros! Felizmente para Taffy, são todas belas garotas-monstro! Infelizmente para Taffy, elas ainda querem matá-la e ela é terrível lutando! Felizmente para Taffy, ela consegue flertar com as inimigas, recrutando-as para sua equipe.

O cerne do jogo é esse: temos a exploração de masmorras, em primeira pessoa, interligada com batalhas eventuais (num ritmo bem agradável), nas quais somos confrontados por alguma bela criatura que quer nos matar.

Aí temos duas opções: lutar ou flertar.

Lutar é o comum, mas com a já dada ressalva de que a protagonista não é muito útil nesse aspecto, tendo que depender mais das potenciais três moças recrutadas para lutar por você.

O flerte envolve aumentar sua confiança até ativar o modo rizz/carisma, permitindo começar uma conversa a la negociação com demônios nos jogos da série Shin Megami Tensei: ao dar a resposta certa, você recruta a personagem e pode adicioná-la em sua equipe. Esse modo carisma também deixa Taffy mais forte, podendo aí lutar com mais eficácia.

Também temos alguns outros elementos bem interessantes no jogo, como conversas noturnas para aumentar a afinidade com membros da sua equipe e ter que gerenciar a ordem de batalha e ciúmes de cada uma. Tudo funciona muito bem, com exploração fluída, uma bela interface e exalando charme em todos os aspectos.

The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest

Como insisto em mencionar vez ou outra, gosto muito de metroidvanias. Isso vem com uma segunda informação implícita, de que eu gosto dos metroidvanias da série Castlevania. O que nem sempre pode ser inferido disso, no entanto, é que eu também gosto muito dos Castlevanias antigos, amavelmente chamados de classicvanias.

O último jogo que joguei que diretamente tentava emular esses jogos e que gostei bastante foi Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2, um belíssimo platformer retrô muito inspirado em Castlevania III — um dos absolutos ápices desse gênero.

Contextualizo tudo isso porque, The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest é uma amálgama absurdamente competente dos três primeiros Castlevanias. Com um mundo explorável, de cidades conectadas por enormes corredores cheios de inimigos, e estágios mais direcionados, temos aqui uma bela carta de amor aos clássicos.

Aproveitando a modernidade, Transylvania também se desfaz de alguns pontos mais doloridos desses jogos, como falta de controle no momentum da personagem ou animações excessivamente travadas.

O jogo introduz uma história bem pitoresca que, sinceramente, não captou muito meu interesse — não que fosse ruim, só é propositalmente humorística de um jeito que, para mim, vai diretamente ao encontro do quão daora o resto do jogo é. Mas, felizmente, o jogo também lhe dá a opção de pular direto para ação e ignorar boa parte disso.

De um jogo que nunca havia ouvido falar para um jogo que mal vejo a hora de lançar, esse é o motivo para continuar vasculhando a Next Fest, edição após edição.

Welp, yesterday was a pretty exhausting day. Not that it was boring — quite the opposite — but social gatherings always drain me a lot. The social battery runs out in a quite complicated way.

So, by the end of it, when I got home, I didn’t have much energy to even think about testing the latest downloaded games, let alone write about them.

Here we are today, then! The last day of the Next Fest, the final demos, the second-to-last post about this edition. Wait, second-to-last? There’s another one coming? Oh no…

PHASE ZERO

When I selected PHASE ZERO to download, a quick look at its Steam page led me to believe it was a 100% serious survival horror game, without much personality in from what’s described there.

Then the opening above made me laugh so much that I started thinking the game might be somewhat satirical. So I played a little more and saw that it was, indeed, a serious survival horror — in the sense that it’s a seriously made game — without straying from the absurdist humor that many games in the genre have. After all, you can’t talk about Resident Evil without mentioning the cheesy dialogue, the elaborate action set pieces, and so on.

Intentionally or not, many situations in the demo brought out a genuine laugh, like the room with an MRI machine — was what was about to happen incredibly telegraphed? Yes, but I still found it simply incredible.

One of the things I liked most about the game was starting out with a shotgun right away. I mean, pistols and knives are cool and all, but come on — we’re all anxious in these games for the moment we finally get our hands on a 12-gauge. Being able to use one from the very beginning is a real treat.

Having a separate inventory for puzzle items also solves some of the navigation issues these games tend to have. That said, I’d rather a game propose a way to manage a tight, limited inventory than simply remove that element altogether.

One of my favorite things in games of this genre is mentally mapping out routes — thinking about what I need to bring on each exploration run through the game’s environments. The possible absence of that element, perhaps in an effort to emphasize the action side of the game a bit more, leaves me with mixed feelings.

PHASE ZERO also makes use of something somewhat outdated these days: fixed camera angles. As someone who works with photography, this element has always been one of my favorites in classics like Resident Evil and Dino Crisis. This allows developers to frame each part of the environment in a way that evokes exactly what each situation calls for.

The action itself is perfectly fine: with what’s available in the demo, I can’t say much. But the rest impressed me quite a bit, and if the developers can maintain that absurdist side that I enjoyed so much, this will probably be a solid addition to the indie survival horror canon.

Rizz Dungeon: Skeleton Key to My Heart

I glanced at Rizz Dungeon and was convinced it was an adult game. Nothing against that, you know? I’m even friends with a few! But it’s not really what I look to cover here, so I almost scrolled right past it.

Fortunately, the incredibly charming art caught my attention, I gave it more than a few seconds, and realized there was no “sexual content” tag. Looking further, I saw it was a dungeon crawler, a genre I enjoy far more than I know — with limited experience in Etrian Odyssey (Atlus, please, it’s been EIGHT YEARS), Shin Megami Tensei, Wizardry, and a handful of others — and I couldn’t avoid giving it a shot.

And I’m really glad I did!

Rizz Dungeon has you playing as Taffy, a weak but charming girl chasing her evil ex who stole her belongings. Who hasn’t been there, right? (Me. I haven’t.)

The problem is that, like any good dungeon, the place is absolutely packed with monsters! Fortunately for Taffy, they’re all beautiful monster girls! Unfortunately for Taffy, they still want to kill her and she’s terrible at fighting! Fortunately for Taffy, she can flirt with enemies to recruit them to her team!

That’s the heart of the game: first-person dungeon exploration interwoven with occasional battles — at a very comfortable pace — in which you’re confronted by some lovely creature that wants you dead.

Then you have two options: fight or flirt.

Fighting is the standard route, but with the already given caveat that the protagonist isn’t very useful in that front, having to rely mostly on up to three recruited girls to fight for her.

Flirting involves building up your confidence until you activate rizz mode, which lets you start a conversation along the lines of demon negotiation in the Shin Megami Tensei series: give the right answer, and you recruit the character to add to your team. This rizz mode also makes Taffy stronger, letting her fight with more effectiveness.

There are also some other interesting elements in the game, like nightly conversations to build affinity with team members, and having to manage battle order and each character’s jealousy. Everything works really well, with fluid exploration, a clean interface, and charm radiating from every corner.

The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest

As I keep mentioning every now and then, I’m a big fan of metroidvanias. That comes with a second piece of implied information: that I enjoy the metroidvania entries in the Castlevania series. What can’t always be inferred from that, however, is that I’m also a big fan of the older Castlevanias, affectionately called classicvanias.

The last game I played that directly tried to emulate those games and that I thoroughly enjoyed was Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2, a gorgeous retro platformer heavily inspired by Castlevania III — one of the absolute peaks of the genre.

I bring all of this up because The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest is an impressively competent amalgamation of the first three Castlevanias. With an explorable world, with towns connected by long corridors packed with enemies, alongside more directed stages, this is a loving tribute to the classics.

Taking advantage of modern sensibilities, Transylvania also does away with some of the more painful aspects of those games, like the too little control over character momentum or overly stiff animations.

The game introduces a quirky story that, honestly, didn’t grab me much — not that it’s bad, it’s just intentionally humorous in a way that, to me, runs somewhat counter to how genuinely cool the rest of the game is. Fortunately, the game also gives you the option to skip straight to the action and ignore most of it.

From a game I’d never heard of to a game I can’t wait to see released — that’s the reason to keep digging through Next Fest, edition after edition.

That's it for today, just three demos. Unfortunately, out of the nine that were left, only these caught my attention enough. That said, there were a lot of demos played and a lot of demos covered, so it comes with the territory. I hope at least one of them caught your eye too, dear reader!

As predicted in the last post, yesterday promised nothing after all — a forecast so accurate that we had no post at all. I’d love to have an excuse beyond “I got lazy and decided to watch football,” but that’s not the case. Steam is the one in the wrong for scheduling a Next Fest alongside the World Cup.

What I can say, however, is that I’ve already played almost all 117 demos I downloaded over the past week, and I think balancing this absurd amount of super important knowledge in one’s head tires you out a little.

I didn’t break my personal record of 125 demos, and of the nine remaining, I’m just hoping I like enough of them to have the energy to write one last post tomorrow, before the inevitable general wrap-up text at the start of next week.

As the demos dwindle, any pretense of thematically grouping the remaining ones also loses its luster, leaving only the thread that I enjoyed all of the following games.

I’ll be honest, folks: I’m a little drained from writing, and I’m pushing myself a bit more to prove a point to myself than anything else. Maybe the texts below won’t be at the best quality level, but oh well! I’ll do better.

Virtue and a Sledgehammer

I think Virtue and a Sledgehammer only misses out on being one of my favorite demos because I found it too short — but since the full package probably won’t be that long either, it’s forgivable.

It’s pretty simple: you’re a woman walking around your hometown with a giant sledgehammer and all the rage in the world. Aside from a few specific elements, most of the environment can be destroyed, opening up paths and revealing secrets.

From the very first moment I raised the hammer above the character and absolutely demolished whatever was in front of her, a very strong feeling of catharsis washed over me, so it’s fair to say they nailed the presentation and visual feedback of the whole thing.

Being a game with a strong narrative focus, Virtue presents all information, dialogue, and so on in a minimalist yet stylish way; there’s something very pleasant about how the dialogue appears during the protagonist’s various memories that we witness.

One caveat I’d raise is that with the little of the story shown in the demo, it’s already possible to infer a lot about how the narrative will likely develop — but then it’s just a matter of hoping the developers can either present the obvious in an enjoyable way, or subvert expectations without forcing it.

It’s a well-rounded game in every sense: the team knew exactly what they wanted to explore and did so with purpose.

Hull Rupture

The first thing to say about Hull Rupture is that the game is quite charming visually. The pixel art has a very notable personality and charm, with a color palette I really enjoy.

It’s a roguelite with tower defense and base-building tones: you command a ship carrying the remnants of humanity after Earth’s destruction, traveling through sectors of space while constructing rooms and defense mechanisms.

The latter are essential for dealing with invading aliens that keep showing up to attack the ship in waves — building various turrets using resources produced by the various other rooms.

After a certain amount of time, you must choose another sector as your destination and the cycle of navigation followed by defense repeats.

Perhaps the most peculiar thing about Hull Rupture is that what’s available to build is limited by what’s purchased at the shop that appears after each successful defense; each room module or weapon built must be bought individually there.

The ability to refresh the stock in search of new offers is quite generous, but this leaves you completely at the mercy of a usable weapon showing up — on top of needing the module that generates the specific resource it requires in the first place. This randomness is a bit annoying and made me take longer than expected to complete one of the necessary steps for the onboarding tutorial.

Even with this somewhat strange dynamic, the game works very well and I think the full release shows promise.

Fruitbearer

Beyond the fact that the game involves stacking fruit and that it randomly exploded in popularity in 2023, I knew nothing about Suika Game. From the little I’d already seen of it, it didn’t seem like something that would interest me too much. Suddenly, Steam recommended the Fruitbearer demo to me, I found it cute, and decided to download it.

A Machiavellian mix between card roguelites and “Suika-likes,” Fruitbearer restricts the fruits at your disposal through the cards in your deck and, subsequently, those drawn in each hand.

Beyond that, the gameplay doesn’t stray much from my understanding of the subgenre: you need to merge identical fruits to form larger ones, earning points toward the threshold needed to clear the stage, while being careful to avoid going past the overflow line (much like reaching the top of the screen in Tetris). Harder stages drop obstacles and so on that crowd the space and make merging fruits more difficult.

The developers take advantage of common roguelite elements to spice up the package with the classics: modifications to cards/fruits (like making a fruit draw a card when it merges with another, or making a fruit generate points every round), cards that transform into permanent, placeable items that modify something in the stage, and so on.

All of this works very well together, but I’ll admit I still don’t quite understand the appeal of this type of game — maybe it’s the simplicity in of itself? I think what I missed most was being able to see the full map and having some tutorial to better understand the overall dynamic of everything.

That said, I’ll reiterate that the game has undeniable charm and I’ll probably give it a shot when it launches.

The Well’s Blessing

The Well’s Blessing caught me a little off guard: I was expecting a game that would just be cute, but it really doesn’t limit itself to that.

From the start, you can see the quality the developers put into the game, from the stylized graphics to the adaptive soundtrack, complete with the famous Animal Crossing-style grunts for dialogue.

As one of three anthropomorphic teenage animals on an appropriately childish adventure, you explore the environment, talk to characters, and try to solve the puzzles in your path.

The dialogue won me over from one of the very first moments, in a conversation with a family also visiting the shrine — complete with a child having to serve as translator since their parents don’t share the same language as our group of friends.

Even though it wasn’t particularly complicated, figuring out the mystery included in the demo gave me a satisfying “aha” moment: that pleasant feeling of having a theory about how to solve something and slowly gathering what you need, only surpassed by the sense of triumph when the theory is confirmed.

There’s enough personality in the aesthetics, soundtrack, and dialogue to carry the game on their own. If the puzzle here is indicative of what the rest of the game will offer, it shows a lot of promise!

Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle

Vanillaware is one of those development teams that has always captivated me visually, with their staggeringly beautiful art, perverted inspired character designs, and fluid motion. Unfortunately, accessing their games outside of consoles has always been difficult — something that may be changing.

When I came across the Veritas Tales demo, from a company veteran who, from what I gathered, illustrated the environments, I went straight in to see what it was. The pleasant surprise: another interactive fiction demo, very much in the mold of classic gamebooks like Sorcery and Fighting Fantasy — page after page, you choose between available options to deal with a situation, turn to the indicated page, and follow the story.

A specific section of the demo introduces a time limit to get through that particular part, with a charming clock staring you down as you make your choices; but beyond that, the gameplay sticks to this, with dice rolls on certain actions and in combat to provide that much-needed randomness. On top of that, we get an intriguing soundtrack provided by an experienced team, Basiscape, adding further fantastical depth to this fairy tale.

According to the Steam page, all of the game’s art was hand-drawn by the developer, Yoshio Nishimura, over six years spent in isolation in a Japanese village — art that is strikingly beautiful and greatly enriches the already incredible experience of the game. This makes the whole thing feel almost mythological.

Playing this game, truly, is like leaning over one of those gamebooks again with paper and pencil in hand. Incredible.

Magical Blush

Great game, okay? Nothing against roguelites, but it’s great to pick up a game with this aesthetic that is simply a regular game, without meta-progression elements or whatever.

Magical Blush is a Zelda with metroidvania exploration, requiring you to scour maps for new spells and abilities that allow you to progress and better handle the game’s challenges.

Using spells, the protagonist manipulates the environment and deals with enemies that (as far as I played) were all tied to elements. The fire enemy resists fire spells and is vulnerable to water ones, the earth enemy resists earth spells, and so on — it’s a rock-paper-scissors system that, given the game’s fast pace, feels very satisfying.

The aesthetic is fluid and beautiful and the soundtrack is invigorating, lively enough to complement a game of this type.

My main criticism is about a specific room with rotating traps that have hitboxes that are a tad awkward to navigate — but that doesn’t really affect in the slightest how much I enjoyed this game’s experience.

My first goal is to keep delaying these posts more and more! My second goal is to find a better way to say “so, which demos did you enjoy”!

Como bem previsto no último post, ontem prometia nada — uma previsão tão certeira que não tivemos post algum. Adoraria ter uma desculpa além de “fiquei com preguiça e resolvi ficar assistindo futebol”, mas não é o caso. Errada tá a Steam de fazer uma Next Fest com a Copa do Mundo.

O que posso dizer, no entanto, é que já joguei quase todas as 117 demos que baixei ao longo da última semana e acho que equilibrar essa absurda quantidade de conhecimento super importante na cabeça fadiga um tico.

Não bati o recorde de 125 demos e, das nove que restam, torço apenas para que goste o suficiente de alguns dos jogos para ter gás para escrever um último post amanhã, antes do inevitável texto de fechamento geral no começo da semana seguinte.

Conforme as demos vão diminuindo, qualquer pretexto de unir as que restam tematicamente também vai perdendo o lustre, restando apenas o laço de que gostei de todos os jogos a seguir.

Vou ser sincero, amizades: tô um pouco drenado de escrever e tô me forçando um pouco mais para provar um ponto para mim mesmo do que qualquer outra coisa. Talvez os textos a seguir não estejam num nível de qualidade tão bacana, mas paciência! Melhorarei.

Virtue and a Sledgehammer

Acho que Virtue and a Sledgehammer só não vai entrar como uma das minhas demos favoritas porque achei ela muito curta — mas como o pacote completo provavelmente não vai ser tão longo, dá pra passar um pano.

É bem simples: você é uma moça andando por aí com uma marreta enorme na sua cidade natal, com toda a fúria do mundo. Fora alguns elementos específicos, muito do ambiente pode ser destruído, abrindo caminhos e revelando possíveis segredos.

Desde o primeiro momento que levantei a marreta acima da personagem e absolutamente destruí seja lá o que estava na frente dela, um sentimento muito forte de catarse me inundou, então é justo dizer que acertaram muito em toda a apresentação e feedback visual da coisa.

Sendo um jogo com um bom foco na narrativa, Virtue apresenta todas as informações, falas e afins de forma minimalista, porém, estilosa; tem algo muito agradável no jeito que os diálogos aparecem durante as várias lembranças da protagonista que assistimos.

Uma ressalva que faço é que com o pouco da história que vemos na demo, já é possível inferir muito de como a narrativa provavelmente irá se desenvolver — mas aí é torcer pros desenvolvedores conseguirem ou apresentar o óbvio de forma agradável, ou subverter as expectativas de forma não forçada.

É um jogo bem amarrado em todos os sentidos: a equipe sabia bem o que queriam explorar e o fizeram com propósito.

Hull Rupture

A primeira coisa a se falar de Hull Rupture é que o jogo é bem bonitinho. A pixel art tem um charme e personalidade bem notáveis, com uma paleta de cores que me agrada muito.

Temos aqui um roguelite com tons de tower defense [lit. defesa de torres] e construção de bases: você comanda uma nave contendo o resquício da humanidade após a destruição da Terra, viajando pelos setores do espaço enquanto vai construindo salas e mecanismos de defesa.

Esses últimos são essenciais para lidar com os alienígenas invasores que insistem em ficar aparecendo para atacar a nave, em ondas — construindo torretas variadas usando os recursos produzidos pelas outras salas.

Após um certo tempo, você deve escolher outro setor como destino e o ciclo de navegação seguida de defesa se repete.

Talvez o mais peculiar de Hull Rupture é que o que está disponível para ser construído é limitado pelo que é comprado na loja que aparece após cada defesa; cada módulo de sala ou arma construído precisa ser comprado individualmente nela.

A capacidade de renovar o estoque em busca de novas ofertas é bem generosa, mas isso acaba te deixando completamente refém de vir alguma arma que você possa construir — fora a necessidade de vir o módulo que gere o recurso específico que ela precisa em primeiro lugar. Essa aleatoriedade é um pouco chata e fez com que eu demorasse mais do que o esperado para concluir uma das etapas do tutorial.

Mesmo com essa dinâmica meio estranha, o jogo funciona muito bem e acho que o jogo completo promete.

Fruitbearer

Além do fato de que o jogo envolve empilhar frutas e que ele explodiu aleatoriamente em popularidade em 2023, não sabia nada sobre Suika Game. Pelo pouco que já tinha visto sobre, não parecia ser algo que fosse me interessar. Subitamente, a Steam me recomendou a demo de Fruitbearer, achei fofinho e resolvi baixar.

Uma mistura maquiavélica entre roguelites de carta e “Suika-likes”, Fruitbearer restringe as frutas que você tem ao seu dispor pelas cartas do baralho e, subsequentemente, aquelas compradas em cada mão.

Fora isso, a jogabilidade não passa muito do meu entendimento do subgênero: você precisa juntar frutas iguais para formas frutas maiores, ganhando assim pontos para o limiar necessário para passar do estágio, mas tomando cuidado para evitar passar da linha de limite (tal qual chegar no topo da tela no Tetris). Estágios mais difíceis empurram obstáculos que vão lotando o espaço e dificultando a união de frutas.

Os desenvolvedores aproveitam os elementos comuns de roguelites para apimentar um pouco do pacote com o clássico: modificações para as cartas/frutas (como fazer com que a fruta compre uma carta ao fundir com outra, ou fazer com que a fruta gere pontos toda rodada), cartas que se transformam em itens permanentes que modificam algo do cenário e por aí vai.

Tudo isso trabalha muito bem junto, mas admito que sigo não entendendo tão bem o apelo desse tipo de jogo — talvez seja pela simplicidade? Acho que o que mais senti falta foi poder ver o mapa inteiro e também de ter alguma tutorialização para entender um pouco melhor a dinâmica de tudo.

Dito isso, reitero que o jogo tem um charme inegável e provavelmente darei uma chance quando lançar.

The Well’s Blessing

The Well’s Blessing me pegou um pouco de surpresa: esperava um jogo que só fosse fofo, mas ele não se limita a isso.

Desde o começo, dá pra ver a qualidade colocada no jogo pelos desenvolvedores, desde os gráficos estilizados até a trilha adaptativa, com direito até aos famosos grunhidos a la Animal Crossing para os diálogos.

Como um de três animais antropomórficos adolescentes em uma aventura apropriadamente pueril, você explora o ambiente, conversa com os personagens e tenta solucionar os puzzles em seu caminho.

Os diálogos me conquistaram desde um dos primeiros momentos, em uma conversa com uma família também visitando o santuário — com direito a uma criança ter que servir como tradutora graças aos seus pais não usarem o mesmo idioma.

Apesar de não ter sido algo particularmente complicado, ter entendido o mistério incluído na demo me rendeu um bom momento de “ahá”: aquela sensação gostosa de ter uma teoria sobre como solucionar e ir lentamente conseguindo o necessário, só superada pelo sensação de êxito quando a teoria é confirmada.

Tem personalidade suficiente na estética, trilha e diálogos para carregar o jogo por si só. Se o puzzle contido aqui for indicativo do que o resto do jogo proporcionará, promete muito!

Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle

Vanillaware é uma daquelas equipes de desenvolvedores que sempre me cativou visualmente, com suas artes absurdamente bonitas, designs de personagens pervertidos inspirados e fluidez de movimento. Infelizmente, sempre foi difícil acessar aos jogos fora dos consoles (algo que talvez esteja mudando).

Quando me deparei com a demo de Veritas Tales, de um veterano da empresa que, pelo que entendi, ilustrava os ambientes, fui seco para ver o que era. A grata surpresa: mais uma demo de ficção interativa, mas bem nos moldes dos antigos livros-jogos como Sorcery e Fighting Fantasy — página após página, você escolhe entre as opções disponíveis, vira para a página indicada e segue a história.

Uma seção específica da demo introduz um limite de tempo para passar pela parte específica, com um simpático relógio te encarando enquanto você faz as escolhas; mas fora isso, a jogabilidade fica nessa, com rolada de dados em algumas ações e no combate para dar aquela aleatoriedade tão necessária. De quebra, ainda temos uma instigante trilha sonora providenciada por uma equipe experiente, a Basiscape, detalhando ainda mais esse conto de fadas.

Conforme a página da Steam, todas as artes do jogo foram desenhadas à mão pelo desenvolvedor, Yoshio Nishimura, ao longo de seis anos isolado em um vilarejo japonês — artes essas que são belíssimas e incrementam muito a experiência já lúdica do jogo. Isso contribui para esse jogo se tornar até mais mitológico.

Jogar esse jogo, de verdade, é como se debruçar com papel e lápis sobre um desses livros-jogos novamente. Incrível.

Magical Blush

Jogão, tá? Nada contra roguelites, mas é ótimo pegar um jogo com essa roupagem que é simplesmente um jogo, sem elementos de metaprogressão ou sei lá o que.

Magical Blush é um Zelda com exploração de metroidvania, tendo que vasculhar os mapas por novas magias que permitem progredir e lidar melhor com os desafios do jogo.

Usando magias, a protagonista manipula o ambiente e lida com inimigos que (até onde joguei) eram todos vinculados com elementos. O inimigo de fogo resiste as magias de fogo e é vulnerável às de água, o de terra resiste as de terra e por aí vai — é um sistema meio pedra-papel-tesouro que, com a velocidade do jogo, fica bem agradável.

A estética é fluída e bonita e a trilha sonora é revigorante, agitada a ponto de agregar num jogo do tipo.

Minha maior crítica é quanto a uma sala específica, com uma armadilha que tem uma hitbox estranha de navegar — mas isso não afeta nem um pouco o quanto gostei da experiência desse jogo.

Meu primeiro objetivo é atrasar cada vez mais! Meu segundo objetivo é achar um jeito melhor de falar “e aí, qual demos vocês gostaram”!

When I decided to cover another Next Fest again, I put together a loose schedule to preserve some semblance of sanity and avoid having to write and post on the same day. So of course I got tangled up between day three and four, and here I am, writing to post on the same day.

Disappointing, as I was pretty happy scheduling all my posts for 12:30 PM. This one will inevitably land closer to mid-afternoon.

Either way, at the end of my last post I promised today would be the day of 2D action games. However, when I sat down to look at my demo list, I realized there weren’t that many 2D games on it — and some of them aren’t even action games. I try not to go back on promises, even the emptiest ones, but I also didn’t want the headache of downloading random demos that didn’t interest me.

So I went ahead and played [almost] all the 2D demos I’d already downloaded — thankfully, most of them were good enough to fill this post on their own.

Mym’s Sword

It had been a while since I wished this hard for a game to be good as when I saw Mym’s Sword, with its incredibly cute aesthetic and a promise of minimalist adventure in the vein of games near and dear to my heart, like the original Zelda and the early Ys titles. Fortunately, the game delivered on all of that and more, because you play as a little blue dog.

From what I played, things are kept simple: you walk around, point your sword at enemies, and jump to avoid obstacles and attacks. The most unusual element is that the sword is controlled directionally rather than with a dedicated attack button — the player points it toward an enemy and, given the opportunity, the character attacks automatically. It slightly reminds me of the combat found in the early Ys games, where the protagonist attacks by bumping into enemies (the famous bumper-car system).

While this initially creates some confusion about how best to approach combat situations, I think it ends up working so intuitively that it doesn’t feel all that different from a regular attack button.

Much like another classic, Link’s Awakening, some sections shift to a side-scrolling perspective, breaking up the expectation and monotony of exploring the game’s evocative environments. The world feels full of secrets to discover, while also giving the impression that you can uncover them at your own pace in the order you prefer.

One caveat I have about exploration: at least in the section I played, I didn’t find a map. If the game doesn’t have one, the scope feels small enough to navigate from memory or with brief notes — but a map, even a diegetic one, would be a nice addition.

Mym’s Sword is charming enough that I went ahead and added the developer’s other games to my wishlist. This kind of game has a nostalgic, pleasant simplicity that, for someone who feels constantly surrounded by games desperately chasing modernity, is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Silver Pines

The eerie small-town vibe of Twin Peaks, the dark atmosphere of Alan Wake, and classic survival horror elements tossed into a blender — but not before being stripped of their third dimension. The resulting blend is Silver Pines, a game that seems to know exactly what it wants to be: an amalgamation of many cool things.

Starring a detective in a strange, desolate town searching for a missing musician, the game quickly impresses with an atmosphere well-suited to its goals, complete with documents fleshing out the peculiar locals and a very well-paced rhythm to its exploration and movement.

Of all its elements, combat is what leaves me most skeptical. I understand its presence here, and I think the game would be worse as a pure enemy-dodging simulator, but the “visceral action” promise on the Steam page feels like an overstatement. As is often the case, some enemies are effectively neutralized just by spacing out attacks, making the action feel dull.

Sure, that comes with the cost of wearing down weapons and/or spending materials to repair them, but not long ago I was enjoying another horror game packed with combat filled with problems, Silent Hill f. I see a comparable dilemma here: small numbers of enemies eventually become harmless due to the stagger after being hit, pushing the game to manufacture danger through large enemy swarms to overwhelm the player — which ends up exhausting the experience through its worst element.

My issue with this approach is that games of this type tend to be most compelling through atmosphere, narrative, and resource management — if Silver Pines leans too hard into combat-heavy scenarios, it seems inevitable that its mediocre action will end up doing a disservice to the rest of the package.

Websy and the Time Rogues

Everything I say about Websy and the Time Rogues needs the caveat that I had zero coordination for learning to play it properly.

A roguelite action game with everything you’d expect from the genre (item selection, branching paths, and so on), Websy leans heavily into the fact that the protagonist is a spider, with web-slinging as the main movement mechanic. You can get around by just clicking around in short, weak little hops, but that’s pretty slow.

The combat itself works, for the second time on this list, in a way that echoes the bumper-car combat of the early Ys games: you need to physically bump into enemies to deal damage. The difference here, however, is that enemies start with armor, meaning any contact damages you instead.

How do you remove the armor? You can wait for them to briefly drop their guard, but the most effective method is spending your silk supply to web them up — which also lets you link multiple enemies together, unifying the damage dealt — or by passing through the red aura around them, leaving them immediately vulnerable.

Add to that the fact that swinging increases the damage dealt to an enemy, and the web-slinging stops being a simple movement mechanic and becomes a complex web (heh) of constant transition between offense and defense.

And I had a really hard time applying any of that.

Not that the game controls poorly or is visually hard to read; I’m just not particularly good at this kind of thing. I already struggle with the movement required in twin-stick shooters, so imagine this. Just watch the video below to see me relying on hops far more than swings.

That said, I found everything here very well-made and plan to give it another shot to get properly acclimated.

Well Dweller

The inevitable metroidvania entry on the list is, as expected, something that at first glance borrows heavily from the ubiquitous Hollow Knight. From the dark, cartoony art style to elements like limited healing and the map’s appearance, Well Dweller doesn’t do much to discourage the comparison.

But Kyle Thompson has already proven with his other games, Islets and Crypt Custodian, that he’s far more interested in making accessible games, unlike the thorny, obtuse balls that Team Cherry’s excellent games tend to be.

Fortunately leaning much more toward the thematic and narrative language of fables rather than copying… whatever it is From Software does, Well Dweller casts you as one of the few birds still remaining in this human kingdom — the cruel queen and her sadistic pleasure in torturing these creatures has decimated their population.

Following the engaging introduction that encompasses the demo’s runtime, the protagonist is torn from a state of quiet survival and thrown into a desperate resistance to save his family. This narrative hook is simple, but it does more, in less time, for the game than what happens in other examples of the genre.

Armed with the peculiar weapon of a matchstick, the demo’s combat doesn’t really transcend the functional: the early-game attacks are basic, and the initial mobility option — a slide — is what’s available to cancel animations and escape attacks. But everything flows well, with no complaints beyond the ease of it — though since that’s something the developer has historically deliberately aimed for, and the fact that the demo covers only the opening areas, no complaints there.

I really enjoyed the demo and am looking forward to another solid release from this developer.

Bulbo’s Belief System

I think one of the most satisfying experiences in puzzle games is oscillating between feeling dumb for not solving something and feeling like a genius for finally cracking it.

From the demo, Bulbo’s Belief System navigates that space very well, with some instinctive challenges easily solved after a moment’s thought — and one in particular that completely stumped me, probably because I got tunnel-visioned on something.

The premise is simple: Bulbo is a somewhat dim lightbulb who believes everything he’s told. In fact, Bulbo only believes what he’s told — without a friendly spring teaching him the concept of jumping, our hero is forever earthbound; without a friend explaining gravity, he simply refuses to fall.

A complicating factor is that Bulbo can only retain four pieces of information at a time, requiring you to discard knowledge as you navigate the maps in search of the objective. Some abilities let him reposition these characters around the map to more useful spots, which becomes necessary due to obstacles that tend to erase or force certain pieces of knowledge— oh goddamn, as I was typing that, I figured out the solution to the map I couldn’t finish earlier.

Cursed Bulbo.

Well, while I go re-download the demo to test my theory, suffice it to say that Bulbo is a charming game with engaging mechanics to explore.

ZWAARD

ZWAARD’s main hook is simple: as you explore the open world, you find various parts that can be used to customize your sword. Each part affects different aspects of the weapon, altering its appearance, speed, and so on. Each can also be dismantled for scrap, which is then used to repair the blade and increase its effectiveness.

Add to that a gun that reloads with sword strikes, a powerful shield, and a generous dodge, and you’ve got a pretty interesting action foundation.

Unfortunately, what most captivated me is also my biggest criticism: the aesthetic is gorgeous and immediately caught my eye, with colorful, busy environments — but they’re extremely hard to read, something only made worse in an action game full of small, not-particularly-saturated enemies who, in most cases, seem to attack with fast projectiles.

I also think the menu needs polish, since it ends up being unnecessarily hard to navigate and read. There seemed to be an excessive desire to make it visually diegetic at the cost of usability.

So, in short: mechanically interesting and visually attractive, but in need of a serious pass on how that visual is presented, and on the overall UX.

I’ll be keeping an eye on it, because I enjoyed my time with the demo.

Nearly four hours late on this post. I’ll never recover from this failure. And to think I still have demos to test for tomorrow… Note to self for the following Next Fest: “prepare three posts in advance.”

Quando decidi novamente fazer essa cobertura da Next Fest, fiz um pseudo-cronograma para conseguir preservar o mínimo de sanidade e não ter que escrever para postar no mesmo dia. Então óbvio que me embananei entre o terceiro e o quarto dia e cá estou, escrevendo para postar no mesmo dia.

Triste, estava bem contente em estar programando todas as postagens para 12h30 — mas essa acabará ficando mais pro meio da tarde, inevitavelmente.

De qualquer forma, no final do último post, prometi que hoje seria o dia dos jogos 2D de ação. No entanto, quando parei pra olhar a lista de demos para testar, vi que não só tem poucos jogos 2D nela como alguns deles nem são de ação. Evito voltar atrás em promessas, mesmo as mais vazias, mas também não quis arrumar dor de cabeça baixando demos aleatórias que não me interessavam.

Então, fui e joguei [quase] todas as demos 2D que já tinha baixado — felizmente, boa parte me agradou e deu pra encher essa postagem só com elas.

Mym’s Sword

Fazia tempo que não torcia tanto prum jogo ser legal quanto quando vi Mym’s Sword, com essa estética fofíssima e prometendo ser uma aventura minimalista tal como jogos que moram no meu coração como o primeiro Zelda e os antigos Ys. Felizmente, o jogo entregou tudo isso e mais, pois você joga como um cachorrinho azul.

Até onde joguei, o que temos aqui é simples: você anda por aí, aponta sua espada na direção dos inimigos e pula para evitar obstáculos e ataques. O mais inusitado disso tudo é a espada ser controlada direcionalmente e não apenas com um botão — o jogador coloca ela na direção do inimigo e, dada a oportunidade, o personagem ataca automaticamente. Lembra um tico a situação encontrada nos primeiros jogos da supracitada série Ys, na qual o protagonista ataca encostando nos inimigos (o famoso sistema de carrinho bate-bate).

Apesar disso inicialmente gerar um pouco de confusão sobre como melhor abordar as situações de combate, acho que acaba funcionando tão intuitivamente que não tem tanta diferença do que se fosse simplesmente um botão de ataque.

Assim como em outro clássico, Link’s Awakening, algumas seções mudam para uma perspectiva lateral, quebrando um pouco a expectativa e a mesmice na exploração dos ambientes evocativos do jogo. O mundo parece estar repleto de segredos para descobrir, com ao mesmo a impressão de que é possível cadenciar a descoberta desses na ordem que o jogador preferir.

Uma ressalva que faço nesse ponto da exploração do jogo é que, ao menos no que explorei, não encontrei um mapa. Caso ele não esteja presente no jogo, acho que é uma exploração suficientemente diminuta a ponto de ser possível navegar pela memória ou com breves anotações — mas seria bacana ter um mapa, mesmo que diegético.

Mym’s Sword é tão cativante que, além dele, adicionei os outros jogos do desenvolvedor para minha lista de desejos. Esse tipo de jogo tem uma simplicidade nostálgica e agradável que, para alguém que se sente sempre envolto em jogos buscando a modernidade, é um bom respiro.

Silver Pines

A vibe de cidade pequena estranha de Twin Peaks, o tom sombrio de Alan Wake e os elementos clássicos de gemas do survival horror jogados em um liquidificador — mas não antes de serem picados para tirar a terceira dimensão. O suco resultante é esse tal de Silver Pines, um jogo que parece saber exatamente o que quer ser: uma amálgama de muitas coisas bacanas.

Estrelando um detetive em uma cidade estranha e desolada atrás de um músico desaparecido, o jogo impressiona desde cedo com uma atmosfera bem propícia para o que ele se propõe a ser, com direito a documentos dando mais informações sobre os personagens peculiares que ali moram e um ritmo muito bem cadenciado na exploração e movimentação.

De todos os elementos do jogo, o que me deixa mais cético é o combate. Entendo a presença dele aqui e acredito que o jogo seria pior se fosse apenas um simulador de desviar dos inimigos, mas a “ação visceral” prometida na página da Steam soa como exagero. Como costumeiro, alguns inimigos são efetivamente neutralizados apenas espaçando suficientemente os ataques, fazendo com que a ação seja desinteressante.

Claro, isso é algo que vem com o custo de gastar as armas e/ou materiais para repará-las, mas não tanto tempo atrás estava me deleitando com outro jogo de terror lotado de combate com alguns problemas, Silent Hill f. Vejo um dilema similar aqui: inimigos em números pequenos eventualmente são inofensivos por conta do atordoamento após serem atingidos, resultando no jogo tentar gerar situações de perigo por meio de grupos enormes de inimigos para sobrecarregar o jogador, o que acaba fadigando a experiência com o pior elemento do jogo.

Minha questão com essa escolha é que jogos desse tipo acabam sendo mais interessantes pela atmosfera, narrativa e/ou navegação dos desafios enquanto tentamos manter recursos — caso Silver Pines cambaleie para esse lado mais focado no combate, parece ser inevitável a eventual transição para um jogo cuja ação medíocre servirá apenas em desserviço ao resto do pacote.

Websy and the Time Rogues

Tudo que eu falar de Websy and the Time Rogues tem que vir com a ressalva de que tive zero coordenação para aprender a jogar ele direito.

Um roguelite de ação com todas as coisas que já viemos a esperar do segmento (seleção de itens, caminhos e afins), Websy capitaliza imensamente em cima do fato do protagonista ser uma aranha, com a mecânica principal de poder balançar com teias pelo mapa. Dá pra andar apenas clicando por aí, de pulinho broxa em pulinho broxa, mas não é tão rápido.

O combate em si funciona, pela segunda vez na lista, de uma forma que remete ao clássico combate de carrinho bate-bate dos primeiros Ys: você precisa encostar nos inimigos para causar dano neles. A diferença aqui, no entanto, é de que os inimigos começam com armaduras, fazendo com que qualquer contato te danifique.

Como tirar as armaduras? Dá pra só esperar que após um tempo eles abaixam as defesas temporariamente, mas o mais eficaz é gastar seu estoque de seda para jogar teia neles — isso também possibilita que você conecte vários inimigos entre si, unificando o dano causado - ou passar pela aura vermelha em volta deles, deixando-os imediatamente vulneráveis.

Somando a isso que balançar faz com que você cause mais dano num possível contato com um inimigo, o balanço deixa de ser uma simples uma mecânica de movimentação e passa a ser uma rede (hehe) complexa de eterna transição entre ataque e defesa.

E tive muita dificuldade para conseguir aplicar isso.

Não que o jogo controle mal ou que seja visualmente difícil de ler; só não sou particularmente bom nesse tipo de coisa. Já tenho certa dificuldade com o tipo de movimentação necessária em twin-stick shooters [jogos de tiro que usam as duas alavancas, uma para movimento e outra para mirar], imagina aqui. Basta ver o vídeo abaixo para me ver dependendo mais dos pulinhos do que do balanço.

Dito isso, achei tudo aqui muito bem feito e planejo dar uma chance para me adequar no futuro.

Well Dweller

A cota metroidvania da lista é, como esperado, algo que a princípio parece emprestar muitos elementos do ubíquo Hollow Knight. Desde o visual cartunesco e sombrio até o uso de elementos como a cura limitada e a aparência do mapa, Well Dweller não faz muito para desencentivar essa comparação.

Mas Kyle Thompson já provou com seus outros jogos, Islets e Crypt Custodian, que está muito mais interessado em fazer jogos mais acessíveis, diferentemente das bolas espinhosas e obtusas que os ótimos jogos da Team Cherry acabam por ser.

Felizmente seguindo muito mais a linha temática e narrativa de fábulas e não copiando… Seja lá o que for que a From Software faz, Well Dweller te vê como uma das poucas aves que ainda restam nesse reino humano — a cruel rainha e seu prazer sádico em torturar esses seres acabou por dizimar a população.

Após a engajante introdução que constitui a duração da demo, o protagonista se vê arrancado da posição de sobrevivência silenciosa e atirado numa resistência desesperada para salvar sua família. Esse gancho narrativo é simples, mas faz mais, e em menor tempo, pelo jogo do que o que acontece em outros exemplos do gênero.

Armado com a peculiar arma de um fósforo, o combate da demo não transcende muito o funcional: os golpes de começo do jogo são simples e a opção de movimento inicial, um deslizar, é o disponível para quebrar animações e escapar de ataques. Mas é tudo bem fluído, sem reclamações além da facilidade — mas como isso é algo visado pelo desenvolvedor e a demo tem apenas as primeiras áreas, sem problemas.

Gostei muito da demo e estou ansioso para mais um jogo legal desse desenvolvedor.

Bulbo’s Belief System

Acho que uma das experiências mais interessantes de jogos de puzzle é ficar transitando entre se sentir burro por não conseguir solucionar algo e se sentir um gênio por conseguir.

Pela demo, Bulbo’s Belief System navega muito bem esse espaço, com alguns desafios instintivos facilmente solucionados após parar para pensar um tico — e um em específico que me iludiu completamente, provavelmente porque sequelei sobre algo.

A ideia aqui é simples: Bulbo é uma lâmpada meio limitada e acredita em tudo que falam pra ele. Na verdade, Bulbo acredita apenas no que falam pra ele — sem uma simpática mola ensinando o conceito de pular, nosso herói é eternamente preso ao chão, sem o amigo explicando pra ele o conceito da gravidade, ele se recusa a cair.

Um complicador disso é que Bulbo retém apenas quatro informações ao mesmo tempo, sendo necessário ir descartando conhecimento enquanto navega pelos mapas atrás do objetivo. Algumas habilidades permitem que ele remaneje esses personagens pelo mapa, para locais mais propícios. Isso acaba sendo necessário pelos obstáculos presentes, que costumam apagar ou forçar algum conhecimento— puta que pariu, enquanto digitava isso, percebi a solução pro mapa que não consegui concluir antes.

Maldito Bulbo.

Bem, enquanto vou baixar a demo novamente para testar minha teoria, basta dizer que Bulbo é um jogo simpático e com mecânicas bacanas para explorar.

ZWAARD

O gancho principal de ZWAARD é simples: ao explorar o mundo aberto, você encontra partes variadas que podem ser utilizadas para customizar sua espada. Cada parte afeta elementos variados da arma, modificando sua aparência, velocidade e afins. Cada uma dessas também pode ser destruída para ganhar mais sucata, usada para reparar a lâmina e aumentar sua efetividade.

Juntando uma arma que recarrega com golpes de espada, um escudo potente e uma esquiva generosa, o jogo tem um alicerce de ação bem interessante.

Infelizmente, o que mais chamou me cativou também é minha maior crítica para o jogo: a estética é linda e chamou minha atenção de imediato, com ambientes coloridos e movimentados — mas eles são extremamente difíceis de ler, algo que só é piorado em um jogo de ação cheio de inimigos pequenos com cores não muito saturadas e que, na maior parte dos casos, parecem atacar com projéteis rápidos.

Também acho que o menu precisa de um polimento, pois acaba sendo desnecessariamente difícil de navegar e ler. Rolou uma vontade excessiva de querer torná-lo visualmente diegético, sacrificando a usabilidade.

Então, resumidamente, é um jogo mecanicamente legal e visualmente bonito, mas que necessita de uma boa passada em como esse visual é apresentado e na UX [user experience, lit. experiência do usuário] como um todo.

Ficarei de olho, pois gostei do tempo que passei com a demo.

Quase quatro horas atrasado com esse post, nunca irei me recuperar dessa falha. E pensar que ainda tenho que testar demos para amanhã… Vou anotar para a próxima Next Fest, “preparar uns três posts com antecedência”.

While looking through the list of downloaded demos and pondering the eternal, inane quest to try to give these posts some reason and unify them under a single theme, I had a sudden flash of inspiration: games that can be played using only the mouse.

What? No, come on, there’s no perverted connotation here! I’m frankly insulted that you’d think I’d do something like that!

Dupery: A Game of Solo Deduction

You know those social deduction games, Mafia/Werewolf? Where some of the players are criminals who need to stay hidden until they kill all the other participants — or the innocents need to identify all the criminals to escape alive? Something in that same vibe, in video game form, would be GNOSIA or, I don’t know, Among Us.

Right, Dupery: A Game of Solo Deduction is a solo version of that, focused on interpreting the unique situations created in each case to figure out who the bad guys to be arrested are, while avoiding arresting innocents. Mess up too much and your reputation drops, resulting in getting fired (and failing).

Even though you can stop and think through all the possibilities to reduce most of the risk, each character’s abilities make the game much more interesting, creating real chances for false positives or webs of lies that’ll trip you up.

The film noir aesthetic, complete with jazz and all, adds a lot to the experience.

Honestly, it made me feel like a dumb dumb at times — which, for me, is a point in its favor.

The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian

Maybe I wasn’t paying attention, but I wasn’t expecting a demo for the sequel to the excellent The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, an interactive fiction game that became noteworthy in 2021 for its visual quality — most games in this genre end up being represented with just blocks of text wrapped in bland interfaces.

The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian follows the same style of game: you guide the life of the title character, from childhood to his inevitable death, in a complicated world that’s extremely socially segregated, where the concept of social mobility is practically nonexistent even for the luckiest.

While in Sir Brante the protagonist is a character who moves between the commoner caste and the noble caste, Prince Jerian casts the player as the kingdom’s crown prince — a kind of special caste that transcends nobility by belonging to a different race [of blue-skinned humans, effectively] — having to navigate his future responsibilities.

What’s available in the demo shows similar systems, with big chunks of story culminating in choices that determine changes to the protagonist’s abilities; these, in turn, determine which future options will be available.

I can’t say with much confidence that this game’s story will live up to the potential, but the first game’s story was interesting and had branches different enough for me, so I’m hoping for something at a similar level here.

Joy Malignant

Joy Malignant is an RPG set in a city where everyone is represented by mosaics of varied images and objects, each indicating elements of that person’s past.

Some characters, for example, have their past struggles with substance dependency represented as a liquor bottle — while another carries a bucket as a representation of their respect for marine life. Not everything makes immediate sense, but it’s all explained quite efficiently within the game itself.

The game begins with the protagonist waking up in this city as a faceless: people stigmatized for having no mosaic on their body.

Beyond that narrative hook, the game’s interesting writing makes room for simple gameplay, having you navigate the city’s environments to perform actions like fishing, working, or talking to customers at a bar.

Instead of rolling dice, you use one of four masks assigned at the start of each day. The chance of getting a positive outcome varies depending on the chosen mask, which can be positive, neutral, or negative.

This, actually, is the game’s strangest element — while I understand it technically creates variability in how you approach challenges and that bad luck can be mitigated, having your four mask options be completely random (at least for the duration of the demo) takes away a bit of player agency.

That said, the game is well-written and visually intriguing enough to earn a spot on my wishlist.

Hack '95

Another little game set inside a computer, but this time with a purely 90s setting.

Okay, actually, it’s not an investigation game, I just wanted to grab your attention before losing you by saying it’s a card game. But hold on, Hack ‘95 is yet another rare specimen in the deckbuilder genre that isn’t a roguelite!

Whether visually, sonically, or narratively, the game exudes a 90s internet culture that ends up being equally nostalgic and cringe-inducing. But it’s all very well-made enough that it’s hard to hate what’s presented here.

The cards and combat themselves, from what I saw in the demo, are relatively simple, but it’s all well-developed and tied into this Windows 95 aesthetic, complete with dial-up internet sounds and pacing until the cards trigger.

This, in fact, is related to my biggest problem with the game… It’s excessively slow. Performatively slow.

The characters, who communicate via chat messages, taking time to type makes sense and I get it. Most attacks being represented as being transferred over dial-up internet, and therefore taking a few seconds each to trigger, also makes sense. But I can’t accept the unjustifiable amount of time it takes to use the healing space during exploration.

Even though it’s all diegetic, these stylistic choices end up really hurting the flow of a game that, if you set them aside, is rather cool.

ShelfLife: Art School Detective

Let me be clear right away: ShelfLife is a queer game. Like, very queer. I’m making this clear because, well, it’s the most immediately evident thing about the game and, therefore, possibly what will push away a specific audience the most. That said, I believe pushing those people away (whether from the game or from Jogos a se Julgar) is a good thing, so, nice!

As the title makes clear, this is an investigation game set around an art school, perhaps one of modernity’s scariest places, full of strange, charming people [editor’s note: Raphael is an artist and graduated from an art program].

There’s nothing too new here: you walk around the environments, interact with the things and people in each scene looking for information, and try to uncover a bit more of the mystery surrounding the crime committed at the game’s start.

The perhaps most distinctive element here is that ShelfLife is also a dating sim; all nine suspects are also romance candidates, complete with affinity bars and everything else.

You can’t get a very good sense of the quality of this romance element from what’s in the demo, but one thing’s certain: the writing is very hit-or-miss. The creativity on display is good, with fairly nice descriptions and little jokes scattered through the interactions — but the characters’ lines are, in many moments, rough.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m about 10 years older than the age range represented in the game, but it reminds me a lot of that “so random xD” spirit we all know well from our teenage years.

Despite that, the game is pretty, with appealing pixel art and visually interesting characters (if a bit caricatured). I don’t know if the final product will deliver enough to win over its audience, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Sovereign Tower

What a cool little game!

Sovereign Tower is a visual novel where you’re the ruler of a kingdom centered on a single magic tower, responsible for handling all the cool and tedious matters that come with it.

The core of the game is split into two main elements: audiences and the round table.

In audiences, you have to listen to the troubles of the people who come to your court and choose how to respond — often resulting in a new quest being added to your list. Here, we can also tweak a bit how our reign is seen by the people, with trust values toward the most significant groups: merchants, mystics, nobles, and commoners.

At the round table, you have to assign your knights to the quests that come out of the audiences. Each knight has separate attributes and affinities, so it’s up to the player to figure out how best to use them to deal with the surrounding problems. Successfully managing your knights results in higher affinity with them, giving you the chance to get to know them better and maybe even something more.

Throughout the game, you unlock new rooms for your tower, all with varied functions. One lets you forge equipment to make your knights stronger, while another reveals your knights’ affinities through the power of espionage and gossip.

The game’s art is quite evocative, with charming characters who feel distinct from one another, and that quality carries over into the writing, which is funny and interesting enough. I believe this is one of the most ambitious games on this list — and also the one that best represented its potential within the scope of its demo.

Dupery: A Game of Solo Deduction

Sabe aqueles jogos sociais de dedução, Mafia/Lobisomem? Nos quais algumas das pessoas são criminosos que precisam permanecer escondidos até matarem todos os outros participantes — ou os inocentes precisam identificar todos os criminosos para escapar com vida? Algo na mesma vibe, no campo dos videogames, seria GNOSIA ou, sei lá, Among Us.

É, Dupery: A Game of Solo Deduction é uma versão solo disso, com foco em interpretar as situações criadas em cada caso para deduzir quem são os inimigos a serem presos, enquanto evita prender inocentes. Erre demais e sua reputação cairá, resultando numa demissão (e falha).

Apesar de dar pra parar para pensar em todas as possibilidades para tentar diminuir boa parte do risco, as habilidades de cada personagem deixam o jogo muito mais interessante, criando reais chances de falsos positivos ou redes de mentira que vão te fazer tropeçar.

A estética film noir, com direito a jazz e todo o mais, agrega muito na experiência.

Sinceramente, fez eu me sentir bem burrinho em alguns momentos — o que, para mim, é um ponto positivo.

The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian

Talvez não estivesse prestando atenção, mas não esperava uma demo para a continuação do ótimo The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, um jogo de ficção interativa que se popularizou em 2021 pela qualidade visual — boa parte dos jogos desse gênero acabam sendo representados apenas com blocos de textos envoltos em interfaces insossas.

The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian segue o mesmo estilo de jogo: você acompanha a vida do personagem titular, desde sua infância até sua inevitável morte, em um mundo complicado e extremamente segregado socialmente no qual o conceito de mobilidade social é praticamente não-existente, mesmo para os mais sortudos.

Enquanto em Sir Brante o protagonista é um personagem que transita entre a casta dos plebeus e a dos nobres, Prince Jerian elenca o jogador como o príncipe herdeiro do reino — uma espécie de casta especial que transcende a dos nobres por pertencerem a uma raça diferente [de humanos com pele azulada, efetivamente] — tendo que navegar suas futuras responsabilidades.

O que é disponibilizado na demo mostra sistemas similares, com grandes blocos de história culminando em escolhas que determinam mudanças nas habilidades do protagonista; estas, por sua vez, determinam quais opções futuras estarão disponíveis.

Não dá pra dizer com muita segurança, mas a história do primeiro jogo era interessante e tinha ramificações suficientemente diferentes para mim, então espero algo num nível similar aqui.

Lança mês que vem!

Joy Malignant

Joy Malignant é um RPG que se passa numa cidade na qual todas as pessoas são representadas por mosaicos de imagens e objetos variados, cada um indicando elementos do passado dessa pessoa.

Alguns personagens, por exemplo, tem seu passado de dependência a substâncias químicas representado como uma garrafa de licor — enquanto outro leva um balde como representação do seu respeito pela vida marinha. Nem tudo faz tanto sentido de bate pronto, mas tudo é explicado de forma bem eficiente no jogo em si.

O jogo começa com o protagonista despertando nessa cidade como um sem-rosto: pessoas estigmatizadas por não terem nenhum mosaico em seu corpo.

Além desse gancho narrativo, a interessante escrita do jogo dá espaço para uma jogabilidade simples, tendo que navegar os ambientes da cidade para executar ações como pescar, trabalhar ou conversar com clientes de um bar.

Ao invés de jogar dados, você usa uma das quatro máscaras atribuídas no começo de cada dia. A chance de ter um resultado positivo varia conforme a máscara escolhida, que pode ser positiva, neutra ou negativa.

Este, inclusive, é o elemento mais estranho do jogo — apesar de entender que tecnicamente gera uma variabilidade em como abordar os desafios e que é possível mitigar o azar, as suas quatro opções de máscaras serem completamente aleatórias (ao menos na duração da demo) tira um pouco de agência do jogador.

Dito isso, o jogo é bem escrito e visualmente intrigante o suficiente para garantir um lugarzinho na minha lista de desejos.

Hack '95

Mais um joguinho que se passa em um computador, mas dessa vez com uma ambientação puramente anos 90.

Em Hack ‘95, você é um hacker incumbido da missão de descobrir o que aconteceu com seu amigo hacker, navegando pela internet e pelas pastas dos computadores para ir desvendando o…

Tá, na verdade, não é um jogo investigativo, só queria chamar atenção antes de perder vocês falando que é um jogo de carta. Mas calma, Hack ‘95 é mais um espécime raro no gênero de deckbuilder que não são roguelites!

Seja visual, sonora ou narrativamente, o jogo exala uma cultura de internet de anos 90 que acaba por ser igualmente nostálgica e constrangedora. Mas é tudo muito bem feito e é difícil odiar o que é apresentado aqui.

As cartas e o combate em si, pelo que vi na demo, são relativamente simples, mas é tudo bem desenvolvido e amarrado nessa estética Windows 95, com direito a sons de internet discada e cadenciamento até as cartas desencadearem.

Isso está relacionado com o meu maior problema com o jogo… Ele é excessivamente lento. Performativamente lento.

Os personagens, que se comunicam por mensagens de chat, demorarem para digitar faz sentido e consigo entender. Boa parte dos ataques serem representados como sendo transferidos por internet discada e, portanto, demorando alguns segundos cada para desencadear, também. Mas não consigo aceitar a quantidade injustificável de tempo que demora para usar um espaço de cura durante a exploração.

Apesar de ser tudo diegético, essas escolhas estilísticas acabam atrapalhando muito o fluxo de um jogo que, desconsiderando-as, é bem legal.

ShelfLife: Art School Detective

Sendo claro desde já, ShelfLife é um jogo queer. Tipo, muito queer. Tô deixando isso claro porque, né, é a coisa mais imediatamente evidente do jogo e, portanto, possivelmente a que mais irá afastar um público específico dele. Dito isso, acredito que afastar essas pessoas (seja do jogo ou do Jogos a se Julgar) seja algo bom, então, eba!

Como o título deixa claro, aqui temos um jogo investigativo que se passa ao redor de uma escola de artes, talvez um dos redutos mais assustadores da modernidade, com pessoas estranhas e cheias de charme [nota do editor: Raphael é artista e se formou em um curso artístico].

Não tem nada de muito novo aqui: você anda pelos ambientes, interage com as coisas e pessoas de cada cena em busca de informações e vai tentando desvendar um pouco mais do mistério acerca do crime cometido nos momentos iniciais do jogo.

O elemento talvez mais distinto aqui se dá no fato de que ShelfLife também é um joguinho de namoro; todos os nove suspeitos também são candidatos para um romance, com direito a barras de afinidade e tudo mais.

Não dá para ter uma noção muito boa da qualidade desse elemento romântico pelo que temos na demo, mas uma coisa é certa: a escrita é bem oito ou oitenta. A criatividade ostentada é boa, com descrições e piadocas relativamente bacanas espalhadas pelas interações — mas as falas dos personagens são, em muitos momentos, sofríveis.

Não sei se é porque já tenho uns 10 anos a mais do que a faixa etária da galera representada no jogo, mas me lembra bastante aquele espírito “tão aleatório xD” que todos conhecemos bem da nossa adolescência.

Apesar disso, o jogo é bonito, com pixel art atraente e personagens visualmente interessantes (apesar de caricatos). Não sei se o produto final irá entregar o suficiente para cativar o público, mas vale a pena ficar de olho.

Sovereign Tower

Que joguinho legal!

Sovereign Tower é uma visual novel na qual você é o regente de um reino centrado em uma única torre mágica, responsável por lidar com todas as escolhas legais e chatas envolvidas com isso.

O cerne do jogo é dividido em dois elementos principais: as audiências e ao equivalente da távola redonda.

Nas audiências, você tem que ouvir as mazelas das pessoas que chegam até sua corte e escolher como reagir — muitas vezes resultando em uma missão nova sendo adicionada para sua lista. Aqui, também conseguimos modificar um pouco de como nosso reinado é visto pelas pessoas, com valores de confiança nos elementos mais significativos: mercadores, sábios, nobres e povo comum.

Na távola redonda, você deve alocar seus cavaleiros para as missões resultantes das audiências. Cada cavaleiro tem atributos e afinidades separadas, então cabe ao jogador analisar como melhor utilizá-los para lidar com os problemas dos arredores. Gerenciamento bem-sucedido de seus cavaleiros resulta em maior afinidade com eles, dando a possibilidade de conhecê-los melhor e talvez até algo mais.

Ao longo do jogo, você vai desbloqueando salas novas para sua torre, todas com funcionalidades variadas. Uma permite forjar equipamentos para deixar seus cavaleiros mais fortes, enquanto outra descobre afinidades de seus cavaleiros com o pode da espionagem e da fofoca.

A arte do jogo é bem evocativa, com personagens charmosos e distintos entre si, e essa qualidade continua na escrita, que é engraçada e suficientemente interessante. Acredito que esse seja um dos jogos mais ambiciosos da lista — e também o que melhor representou seu potencial dentro do escopo da demo.

Peço desculpas pelo clickbait de duplo sentido, mas foi mais forte do que eu. Não esqueça de deixar seu comentário caso tenha sido atraído por essa safadeza — em especial me falando quais jogos mais te chamaram atenção.

Perhaps the most shocking thing to happen on the day I’m writing this post is Spain drawing with Cape Verde in the World Cup — one of the tournament favorites completely blocked by a first-time participant, featuring a player who was reportedly scouted via LinkedIn.

But for me, having just finished scrolling through the Next Fest demo list, the real shock is the absurd number of questionable-quality games flooding the festival. Not that this is anything new, but the shock comes from the feeling that the ratio keeps tilting further toward the negative side of the equation.

I won’t deny that I’m including rougher, more unpolished amateur games in that assessment, but a big chunk of the problem comes from the already infamous asset flips and AI shovelware. After all, someone putting in effort to make something not-so-great bothers me far less than someone churning out whatever the above image represents.

I’ll admit I toyed with the idea of doing a special post toward the end of the week, playing a random number of these clearly AI slop shenanigans — but I think my sanity is worth more than that.

Anyway, on to more demos.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Aside from a few minutes lost to the tactical GBA game, I’ve never played an Onimusha before, but I always thought the franchise looked pretty cool. Samurais and demons? Sure!

I don’t usually pay much attention to AAA game demos during this period, since I feel it goes a bit against the spirit of the whole thing — but the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo kept staring at me until I gave in.

Playing it here was a mistake, honestly. Stupid Capcom, releasing yet another great game at those outrageous [Brazilian] prices.

But yeah, this is yet another game from Capcom that looks absurdly promising — a studio that, at this point, might be in one of the longest stretches of near-uncontested success in the industry’s history.

The game handles with all the fluidity you’d expect from a modern action title, with responsive controls that are easy to grasp. Saying that the visual impact of every exchange of blows and parry is satisfying would be underselling what’s on display here.

I do need to mention that, while I understand the franchise has always used real personalities as models for its characters (Jean Reno in 3 is something that always fascinated me, from a distance), I find it to be in extreme poor taste to use the likeness of the iconic Toshiro Mifune to model the protagonist of this game. I understand it’s something allowed by his family’s estate, but this kind of digital necromancy doesn’t sit right with me.

Beyond that, I have some concerns about the passivity of the enemies and whether the humor present in the demo will stop being charming with more exposure, but my time with it was very enjoyable.

Kodama: Slumber of the Gods

A game in this style that doesn’t try to completely imitate Hollow Knight, yay!

I really enjoyed the little I got to play of Kodama: Slumber of the Gods in the demo. You start the game already extremely agile, which I take as a sign that future upgrades will make the movement even more interesting.

While I’m not completely won over visually, there’s an undeniable charm in the art style used to draw the intrinsically Japanese environments and enemies — and playing as a walking turnip/radish [I’m unsure!!!] is a surprisingly compelling hook.

The combat is also enjoyable: fast and, with what’s available in the demo, straightforward. The enemies in this opening zone aren’t very interesting, but I really liked how the fight against the first boss was structured. Simple again, but very effective.

Stackmon

Ever since I first saw Cultist Simulator, I’ve been fascinated by these games about gathering and managing cards representing characters, resources, and locations. I don’t know if it’s just the tabletop game energy — something I love — or if the simplicity makes the whole package addictive, but I always find myself drawn to new releases in this style.

When I saw the Stackmon demo — another entry in the genre, but with an already appealing creature collection aesthetic — I downloaded it immediately. After spending some time with it, I have to say… it’s another game in the genre of gathering and managing cards representing characters, resources, and locations.

In all seriousness, there’s a lot to like here. Unlike many other games of this type, there isn’t much pressure. You collect resources, sell them to earn money to buy more card packs (which can contain anything from recipes to resource sources), and gradually piece everything together with the goal of accumulating exploration points and gear to better venture out with your partners.

Using those exploration points, you enter routes with arenas that culminate in battles against other trainers — but this is also where you can capture more Stackmons to add to your team. It’s a relatively passive experience, but it all works well.

The monster designs and everything else look great, evoking a lot of Pokémon but without the weight of that enormous franchise, which is exactly what I look for in games involving collectible creatures.

Sting & Swing

A few months ago, a game called Super Battle Golf appeared on Steam — essentially a golf game with a Mario Party mindset and item system. Since it seemed like a great game to play with friends, my circle picked it up and it quickly became one of those games you load up for an hour of chaotic chatting and laughing.

Enjoying that experience so much made Sting & Swing a very attractive demo to download. A golf-style adventure game where you play as a bee? Sure, why not.

But I have to say I didn’t expect to find it nearly as engaging as I did.

The game starts without much ceremony, exactly as in the video above: you’re a little bee in a mysterious place with beautiful pixel art, and you need to guide a ball into holes. Simple, easy to understand, no fuss. At least, that was the first impression.

Then I kept playing the demo and found an extremely well-developed map, with plenty of secrets and hidden corners to explore. It reminded me a lot of Arcane Golf, a pretty solid game that never got much recognition — but Sting & Swing transcends the standard golf mechanics and well-thought-out physics. While Arcane Golf has stages designed to offer directed challenges, Sting has a relatively open map.

The highlight here is exploration: to finish the demo, you need to find 25 flags — but on my first run I found nearly 40, and I saw in a comment that there are 80 total hidden across the map.

It had been a while since I’d seen a game so simple, yet with so much to offer.

lily’s world XD

I find it interesting how, the further we get in time, the more common two things become: nostalgia for the 2000s, and stories told entirely through some digital device.

Both are natural, and they share the same root cause — people who grew up in the 2000s getting older and finding their artistic voice. Nostalgia for the years we lived through those formative phases is common, and as generations become increasingly immersed in these technologies, more of our everyday experiences can be represented, replicated, and projected into similar environments.

lily’s world XD is another work that explores this medium, unfolding a narrative around the computer of Lily, an Asian girl living the peak of her teenage years in the United States — a computer found randomly years later by the player. Driven by eternal human curiosity, the player starts snooping through the machine and its conveniently preserved history.

At first, everything seems fairly mundane. A teenager dealing with insecurity, body image issues, and various social struggles. But with every new corner explored on the machine, Lily’s story grows more depressing and, speaking as someone who grew up around the same era, familiar.

I can’t say I have much nostalgia for this time period; setting aside the lack of responsibilities, those years were relatively unhappy for young Raphael. But precisely because of that, I can identify with a lot of what surfaces, both implicitly and explicitly, in the narrative and its characters — characters who, notably, are all represented through real photos from the developer’s own adolescence, which is a bit strange, but adds a very interesting texture to the game.

I don’t think lily’s world XD will be a great classic or a particularly formative experience, but I believe it will be a melancholy narrative set at exactly the right level to entertain and prompt a little reflection on the past.

Exark

Exark is a pretty cool game, but it produced the strangest feeling I’ve had playing anything so far.

The art is great, the music has a nice charm, and everything about the gameplay flows so smoothly and intuitively that you feel like you’re succeeding even if you’re not entirely sure what you’re doing.

You have to manage your vehicle — a massive “ark-ship” — traveling through zones to reach the edge of the world. To do that, you need to do something very common in board games: build an engine, assigning buildings and workers that complement each other to generate resources and weather enemy attacks as you travel.

While there are weapons in the game, the focus isn’t necessarily on combat, but on survival — whether you do that by tanking the hits or taking out enemies before they destroy your ship is up to you and whatever you managed to build.

And all of this, as I said, flows really well: you allocate buildings and workers, choose a destination, resist the attacks, and repeat. Then you push a few maps further and get destroyed without really understanding what you did wrong or what was missing.

That’s genuinely my only criticism of this little game that caught me off guard: I played three times, and in every run I felt like I had a solid engine — but none of them made it past the seventh stage. Whether that’s a balancing issue or a personal mistake on my part, I honestly can’t tell.

What I do know is that the full game promises a large number of buildings with different effects, along with various factions to modify how you navigate the world, and that has me curious to come back and see how the final version turns out.

As promised, no alphabetical order! Though we do have two S's… I'm not fixing it, that's just how it is now. Out of these demos, which ones caught your eye?

Talvez a coisa mais chocante que tenha acontecido no dia que estou escrevendo essa postagem seja o fato da Espanha ter empatado com o Cabo Verde na Copa do Mundo — uma das favoritas ao título sendo completamente segurada por uma estreante em Copas, com direito até a um jogador convocado por LinkedIn.

Mas, para mim, que acabei de terminar de olhar a lista de demos da Next Fest, o mais chocante é a absurda quantidade de jogos de qualidade duvidosa inundando o festival. Não que isso seja novidade, mas o choque vem do fato de parecer que cada vez mais a proporção pende para o lado negativo da equação.

Apesar de não negar que incluo jogos mais, digamos, rústicos nessa opinião, boa parte do problema se dá nos já famigerados asset flips1 e porcariadas de IA. Afinal, alguém se esforçando pra fazer algo não tão bom me agride imensamente menos do que alguém produzindo qualquer coisa da imagem acima.

Admito que brinquei com a ideia de fazer uma postagem especial perto do final da semana, jogando uma quantidade aleatória desses jogos claramente movidos por IA, mas acho que minha sanidade vale mais.

E, falando nisso, hora de mais algumas demos.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Tirando alguns minutos perdidos com o jogo tático para GBA, nunca joguei um Onimusha antes, mas sempre achei que parecia uma franquia bem maneira. Samurais e demônios? Só vamo!

Não costumo dar muita atenção para demos de jogos AAA durante esse período por acreditar que isso vai um pouco contra o espírito da coisa, mas a demo de Onimusha: Way of the Sword ficou me encarando e acabei cedendo.

Foi um erro jogar isso aqui, tá? Capcom sacana, mais uma vez lançando um jogo legal por esses valores canalhas!

Mas é, mais um jogo que parece absurdamente promissor da Capcom, que há essa altura talvez esteja em uma dos períodos de sucesso quase indiscutível mais longos da história.

O jogo controla com toda a fluidez que você espera de um projeto de ação moderno, com controles responsivos e fáceis de entender. Dizer que o impacto visual de cada troca de golpes e bloqueio é satisfatório seria vender bem por baixo a qualidade do que é apresentado aqui.

Preciso comentar que, embora entenda que a franquia sempre fez uso de personalidades como modelo para os personagens dos jogos (Jean Reno no 3 é algo que sempre me cativou muito, de longe), acho de incrível mau tom o uso da aparência do icônico Toshiro Mifune para modelar o protagonista desse jogo. Entendo que é algo permitido pelos responsáveis da família, mas essa necromancia digital não me agrada.

Fora isso, tenho preocupações quanto a passividade dos inimigos e se o humor presente na demo deixará de ser charmoso com maior exposição, mas meu tempo com a demo foi muito agradável.

Kodama: Slumber of the Gods

Um jogo nesse estilo que não tenta emular completamente Hollow Knight, eba!

Gostei muito do pouco que deu pra jogar de Kodama: Slumber of the Gods na demo. Você já começa o jogo extremamente ágil, o que entendo como um sinal de que futuras habilidades desbloqueadas farão com que a movimentação seja ainda mais interessante.

Apesar de não estar completamente encantado pelo jogo visualmente, há um charme inegável no estilo artístico para desenhar os ambientes e inimigos intrinsecamente japoneses — e jogar como um nabo ambulante é um atrativo incrível.

O combate também é agradável; rápido e, com o que temos disponível na demo, simples. Os inimigos dessa zona inicial não são muito interessantes, mas gostei bastante de como foi estruturada a luta com o primeiro chefe do jogo. Novamente, simples, mas muito eficaz.

Stackmon

Desde que vi Cultist Simulator pela primeira vez, sou fascinado por esses jogos de juntar e gerenciar cartas que representam personagens, recursos e locações. Não sei se é só por terem uma energia de jogos de tabuleiro — algo que adoro — ou se a simplicidade faz com que o pacote inteiro acabe sendo viciante, mas sempre me pego interessado com novos lançamentos nesse estilo.

Quando vi a demo de Stackmon, mais um jogo no estilo, mas com uma já atraente roupagem de coleção de criaturinhas, fui seco para baixar. Após passar um tempo com a demo, devo dizer que… É mais um jogo no gênero de juntar e gerenciar cartas que representam personagens, recursos e locações.

Falando sério, tem muito o que gostar aqui. Diferentemente de muitos outros jogos do tipo, como o próprio Cultist Simulator, não se tem muita pressão aqui. Você vai coletando recursos, vendendo eles para conseguir dinheiro para comprar mais pacotinhos de cartas (que vão ter desde receitas até fontes de recurso) e meio que juntando tudo com o propósito de juntar pontos de exploração e itens para se aventurar melhor com seus parceiros.

Usando esses pontos de exploração, você entra em rotas com arenas que culminam em batalhas com outros treinadores — mas aqui também é onde você pode capturar mais Stackmons para adicionar à sua equipe. É relativamente passivo, mas também tudo funciona bem.

Os designs dos monstrinhos e do resto são legais, evocando muito de Pokémon só que sem toda a carga daquela enorme franquia, algo que sempre busco em jogos que envolvem criaturinhas colecionáveis.

Sting & Swing

Alguns meses atrás, surgiu um tal de Super Battle Golf na Steam, uma espécie de jogo de golfe só que com mentalidade e itens de Mario Party. Como parecia um ótimo jogo para jogar entre amigos, meu círculo aderiu e rapidamente se tornou um daqueles jogos para passar uma horinha papeando e dando risada.

Ter aproveitado tanto a experiência nesse jogo fez com que Sting & Swing se tornasse uma demo muito atrativa para baixar. Um jogo de aventura tipo golfe e você é uma abelha? Claro, porque não.

Mas tenho que dizer que não esperava que fosse achá-lo tão engajante quanto achei.

O jogo começa sem muita cerimônia, exatamente como no vídeo acima: você é uma abelhinha num lugar misterioso com uma belíssima pixel art e precisa guiar uma bola até os buracos. Simples, fácil de entender e sem muita firula. Ao menos, essa foi a primeira impressão.

Aí eu continuei jogando a demo e vi que é um mapa muito bem desenvolvido, com vários secretos e cantinhos para explorar. Me lembrou muito Arcane Golf, um jogo bem bacana e sem muito reconhecimento — mas Sting & Swing transcende o uso das mecânicas padrões de golfe e da física bem pensada. Enquanto Arcane Golf tem estágios feitos para oferecer desafios direcionados, Sting tem um mapa relativamente aberto.

O destaque aqui é a exploração: para terminar a demo, você precisa encontrar 25 bandeiras, mas na minha primeira jogatina eu encontrei quase 40 — vi por um comentário que ao todo tem 80 escondidas no mapa.

Fazia tempo que não via um jogo tão simples, mas com tanto a ofertar.

lily’s world XD

Acho engraçado como, quanto mais avançamos no tempo, mais comum duas coisas se tornam: nostalgia pelos anos 2000 e histórias que são contadas inteiramente pelo intermédio de algum dispositivo digital.

Ambas são naturais e acabam tendo a mesma causa, pessoas que cresceram nos anos 2000 envelhecendo e se encontrando artisticamente. Nostalgia pelos anos em que vivemos essas fases formativas são comuns e conforme as gerações vão sendo cada vez mais imersas nessas tecnologias, mais nossas vivências cotidianas podem ser representadas, replicadas e projetadas em ambientes similares.

lily’s world XD é outra obra que explora esse meio, desenrolando uma narrativa em torno do computador de Lily, uma menina asiática vivendo o ápice da adolescência nos Estados Unidos, encontrado aleatoriamente anos depois pelo jogador. Movido pela eterna curiosidade humana, o jogador começa a fuçar pelo computador e seu histórico convenientemente preservado.

Inicialmente, tudo parece bem corriqueiro. Uma adolescente sofrendo de insegurança, problemas de imagem e mazelas sociais diversas. Mas a cada canto novo explorado na máquina, a história de Lily fica mais deprimente e, falando como alguém que cresceu mais ou menos na mesma época, familiar.

Não posso dizer que tenho uma nostalgia muito grande por esse período; abstraindo a falta de responsabilidades, esse período foi relativamente infeliz para o Raphael criança/adolescente. Mas, justamente por isso, consigo me identificar com muito do que surge no implícito e explícito da narrativa criada no jogo e de seus personagens — estes, aliás, que são todos representados com fotos reais da adolescência da desenvolvedora, algo que é meio estranho, mas adiciona uma plasticidade muito interessante para o jogo.

Não acho que lily’s world XD será um grande clássico ou uma experiência muita formativa, mas acredito que será uma narrativa melancólica no nível adequado para entreter e causar um pouco de reflexão quanto ao passado.

Exark

Exark é um jogo bem bacana, mas que gerou a jogabilidade que me deixou com sensação mais estranha até então.

A arte é bem legal, a música tem um charme bacana e tudo da jogabilidade parece fluir tão bem e intuitivamente que você se sente com sucesso mesmo sem ter muita certeza do que está fazendo.

Você tem que gerenciar seu veículo, um enorme “ark-ship”, viajando pelas zonas para alcançar a beira do mundo. Para fazer isso, você tem que fazer algo muito comum em jogos de tabuleiro: construir uma “engine” [lit. motor], atribuindo construções e trabalhadores que se complementem para gerar recursos e navegar os ataques inimigos enquanto viaja.

Apesar de, sim, ter armas no jogo, o foco não está necessariamente no combate, mas sim em sobreviver — se você vai fazer isso aguentando o tranco ou matando os inimigos antes deles destruírem sua nave, aí vai de você e do que conseguiu construir.

E tudo isso, como disse, flui muito bem: você vai alocando as construções e trabalhadores, escolhe um destino, resiste aos ataques e repete. Aí você avança algumas fases e é destruído sem entender direito o que você fez errado, o que faltou.

Acho que esse é genuinamente minha única crítica a esse joguinho que me surpreendeu: joguei três vezes e em todas senti que estava com uma “engine” boa, mas no fim nenhuma conseguiu passar da sétima fase. Se é uma questão de balanceamento ou de algum erro pessoal meu, não sei.

Mas sei que o jogo final promete uma quantidade bem grande de prédios com diferentes efeitos, juntamente de várias facções para modificar como você melhor pode navegar pelo mundo, e isso me deixa curioso para voltar e ver como a versão final do jogo será.

Como prometido, sem ordem alfabética! Se bem que temos dois “S”… Não vou retificar, agora vai ficar assim. Dessas demos, quais mais te interessaram?

Four months later, we’ve finally reached the next Steam demo festival — which means I’ll have the pleasure of playing through dozens of new games over the next week.

For the uninitiated, Steam Next Fest gives developers a space on the platform to spotlight demos of their upcoming games. These days, the festival is so massive that nearly 5000 demos are available.

As usual, I play as many demos as I can — doing extensive digging to try to preserve my sanity and make the most of my time — and pick out the most interesting ones to highlight here.

The last edition, back in February, had some great games, with a few that have since launched and become obsessions, like Cursed Words and Esoteric Ebb. From what I’ve already explored of this June’s offerings, I think I’ll have plenty to write about soon.

How this works

Throughout the week, I'll be downloading an indecent number of demos and the most interesting ones show up here, one post a day with around six games each. No scores — just short opinions on what I liked or didn't, and some screenshots.1

Another Door

Another Door is a weird little multiplayer game.

Framed as a game show, players are competing to see who ends up with the most points to win the grand prize. How that’s determined?

Each round has a variable number of challenges, kind of like monsters on a standard card roguelite. Here, though, the confrontation is abstracted into a single choice for each player. In one of them, you choose between taking ten damage or gambling on luck and taking anywhere from one to thirty.

The real competitiveness kicks in with options like “if one or three players choose this option, you take X damage” and “if two or four players choose this option, you take Y damage.” So yeah — Another Door ends up being a social betting game, trying to navigate your choices to minimize risk and maximize gains; while also trying to trick your friends into getting screwed more than you.

Items and other wrinkles come into play, but that’s the core of it. Simple, fast, and intriguing — perfect for three to four players. I’m skeptical about the concept’s long-term staying power, but any game that makes me feel even a little like someone in one of Kaiji’s wild adventures has my attention.

About Fishing

What a game!

I’m always caught off guard when one of the first demos I play grabs me this hard. I sometimes wonder if all of this is worth the effort and energy, and then a mystery involving fish shows up, and I’m forced to declare: “video games are awesome.”

I never really got the appeal of fishing. I went a few times as a kid and just found it boring. Sure, I can see it as a contemplative activity that also has the bonus of potentially getting you some food, but it’s not for me.

About Fishing delivers fishing gameplay I actually enjoyed, with incredible music and, above all, a genuinely intriguing narrative.

After the intro, you’re thrown into a town full of bizarre characters and strange elements, with the promise of trying to make some sense out of the madness. The sense of humor running through the exploration is very welcome, with a tone that reminds me a little of the absurdism in Twin Peaks.

I can’t wait to explore more of this story and maybe even develop a taste for this whole fishing thing.

Bibidi Bibidi!

I’ll admit I started Bibidi Bibidi! pretty half-heartedly. Something about the aesthetic and the way the first few screens played out kept whispering at me to drop it and move on, but I resisted.

In the end, I played two full runs of this roguelite deckbuilder (the first of many in the festival, I’m sure), even if I still feel it’s rougher around the edges than I’d like.

The foundation is the same one we all know: you start with a specific deck and, as you move through rooms, you add cards and pick up items with various effects that change how you play.

Bibidi’s twist, though, is that each card has three distinct parts, and you have to combine three of them [on the first character] before you can cast them into a spell. One card gives the magic a modifier, another provides the effect, and the last determines its potency. It’s a simple but functional system, made even better by the fact that the character actually announces the card names while casting the spells.

Did it win me over completely? No, but it’s got a certain charm to it, you know?

Burn-9

You know Metal Gear? Those dramatic espionage stories where you sneak through an enemy base?

Well, Burn-9 isn’t quite that. In this interactive visual novel, you’re the operator — the one commanding and supporting the spies who are actually out in the field. You scan for options and direct your agents toward the most appropriate paths through the disastrous mission they’re on.

The game promises an interesting narrative that touches on familiar espionage genre elements, but I’m uncertain about its variability beyond getting a different response depending on which option you pick.

That said, my time with Burn-9 was pleasant, with an engaging soundtrack and characters with well-defined voices. I’m curious to see what the final product looks like.

Catechesis

Do I need to go back and play Yuppie Psycho? Because my time with Catechesis made me think that if the developers’ previous game is even half as good as this one, I’ve been wasting time by not playing it sooner.

The demo puts you on a mundane errand to store some things, but it quickly derails into a wild adventure with a complex story that, at least at the start, doesn’t seem entirely linear. It’s got some really lovely art, too.

Between pistols, knives, and demonic powers, you have to fight through the strange nightmares populating the dark environments you need to demystify in order to reach your objectives.

But maybe the scariest thing of all is surviving school life and the city’s cast of unhinged personalities.

Courier Beware

When I first laid eyes on Courier Beware, with its 1-bit aesthetic, palette swaps, horror themes, and RPG elements, my mind immediately went to WORLD OF HORROR — a game that blended two things that seemed to be everywhere in 2018: roguelites and Junji Ito. I had a lot of fun with it, but the developer’s disappearance for a few years and the somewhat underwhelming return left a bitter taste.

In the search for something similar but better, Courier Beware’s familiar look caught my eye right away.

Much more focused on balancing time spent training your skills, investigating the town’s mysteries, and earning money to pay rent, Courier has simple gameplay that ends up feeling more like a Tamagotchi than an RPG — but I genuinely enjoyed it, simplicity and all.

What stands out most is the aesthetic, which has an absurd amount of charm. The mystery stories I explored were minimalist, but they do the job.

I just hope the final game doesn’t end up quite like WoH did.

I'm not sure what coincidence led to half of today's demos having a supernatural/horror angle, but I'm into it. Was there a demo that caught your eye? Let me know!

A última edição, em fevereiro, teve vários jogos bacanas, com alguns que já lançaram e se tornaram obsessões, como Cursed Words ou Esoteric Ebb. Pelo que já explorei do que está sendo ofertado nessa edição de junho, acho que também terei muito sobre o que escrever em breve.

Como vai funcionar

Ao longo da semana, baixarei uma quantidade indecente de demos e as mais interessantes aparecem aqui, numa postagem por dia com uns seis jogos cada. Sem notas — só opiniões curtas, o que gostei ou não, e algumas imagens.

Dito isso, não teremos notas nem nada do tipo: serão apenas opiniões curtas explicando um pouco dos jogos, o que gostei ou não de cada um e algumas imagens.1

Another Door

Another Door é um jogo multijogador meio estranho.

Contextualizado como um game show, os jogadores estão competindo para ver quem termina com mais pontos para ganhar o grande prêmio. Como isso é determinado?

Bem, cada rodada tem um número variável de desafios, como se fossem monstros em uma rota de um roguelite de cartas padrão. Aqui, porém, o confronto é abstraído em uma escolha única para cada um. Em um deles, você escolhe entre tomar dez de dano ou apostar na sorte e tomar entre um e trinta.

A competitividade de fato surge nos confrontos com opções como “se um ou três jogadores escolherem essa opção, você toma X de dano” e “se dois ou quatro jogadores escolherem essa opção, você toma Y de dano”. Então, sim: Another Door acaba sendo um jogo de aposta social, tentando navegar suas opções para minimizar o risco e maximizar seus ganhos; ao mesmo tempo, tentar enganar seus amigos para que eles se ferrem mais do que você é essencial.

Aí entram várias questões como itens especiais e afins, mas o cerne do jogo é esse. Simples, rápido e intrigante — perfeito para jogar com três a quatro jogadores. Apesar de estar cético quanto a durabilidade do conceito, qualquer jogo que faça eu me sentir um tico como um participante de algum jogo mirabolante de Kaiji tem minha atenção.

About Fishing

Que jogo!

Sempre fico em choque quando uma das primeiras demos que jogo me capturam tão fortemente. Admito que às vezes penso se isso tudo vale o esforço e energia, aí um mistério envolvendo peixes aparece e sou obrigado a exclamar: “videogames são fodas”.

Não entendo muito a graça de pescar. Fui algumas vezes quando moleque e só achei tedioso. Consigo ver como uma atividade contemplativa e que ainda tem o bônus de potencialmente render uma comidinha, mas não é algo para mim.

About Fishing entrega uma jogabilidade de pesca que achei bem gostosinha, com uma música incrível e, acima de tudo, uma narrativa bem intrigante.

Após a introdução, você é jogado numa cidade cheia de personagens e elementos bizarros, com a promessa de tentar achar um mínimo sentido na loucura. O senso de humor que acompanha sua exploração é muito bem-vindo, com um tom que me lembra um pouco o absurdismo presente em Twin Peaks.

Não vejo a hora de poder explorar mais essa história e ver se pego gosto por essa tal de pesca.

Bibidi Bibidi!

Admito que comecei meio sem saco para Bibidi Bibidi!. Algo na estética e desenrolar das primeiras telas do jogo sussurrava para que largasse mão dele e partisse para a próxima, mas resisti.

No fim, joguei duas runs completas desse roguelite deckbuilder (o primeiro de muitos do festival, com certeza), apesar de ainda sentir que ele é bem mais cru do que gostaria.

A base do jogo é a mesma que todos já conhecemos: você começa com um baralho específico e, conforme avança pelas salas, vai adicionando cartas nele e pegando itens com efeitos variados que afetam como você joga.

O diferencial de Bibidi, no entanto, é que cada carta tem três partes diferentes, tendo que juntar três delas [no primeiro personagem] antes de poder conjurá-las num feitiço. Uma carta vai dar um modificador para a magia, outra o efeito e a última a potência. É um sistema simples, porém funcional, melhorado ainda mais pelo fato do personagem enunciar o nome das cartas para conjurar os feitiços.

Me convenceu 100%? Não, mas tem um charme, sabe?

Burn-9

Sabe tipo Metal Gear? Aquelas histórias dramáticas de espionagem nas quais você explora uma base inimiga de forma furtiva?

Então, Burn-9 não é bem isso. Nessa visual novel interativa, você é o operador comandando e dando suporte para os espiões que de fato estão no campo. Você escaneia por opções e direciona seus agentes para os caminhos mais apropriados para a missão desastrosa na qual estão.

O jogo promete uma narrativa interessante que toca em elementos comuns do gênero da espionagem, mas fico incerto quanto à variabilidade além de receber uma resposta diferente a depender da opção selecionada.

No entanto, meu tempo com Burn-9 foi agradável, com uma trilha sonora envolvente e personagens com vozes bem definidas. Estou ansioso para ver como o produto final será.

Catechesis

Caramba, preciso voltar e jogar Yuppie Psycho? Porque meu tempo com Catechesis só me fez pensar que, se o jogo anterior desses desenvolvedores for tão bom quanto essa nova entrega, perdi tempo de não jogar antes.

A demo te coloca numa missão corriqueira de guardar umas coisas, mas rapidamente descarrilha para uma aventura maluca com uma história complexa e, ao menos no começo, que não parece ser exatamente linear. Ela tem, no entanto, artes bem bonitinhas.

Entre pistolas, facas e poderes demoníacos, você tem que lutar contra os estranhos pesadelos que populam os ambientes trevosos que você tem que desmistificar para conseguir alcançar seus objetivos.

Mas o mais assustador de tudo talvez seja ter que sobreviver a vida escolar e as personalidades malucas da cidade.

Courier Beware

Quando bati o olho em Courier Beware, com sua estética 1 bit com mudança de palheta, temática de terror e elementos de RPG, logo pensei em WORLD OF HORROR — um joguinho misturando duas coisas que estavam em alta em 2018: roguelites e Junji Ito. Apesar de ter me divertido muito com ele, o eventual desaparecimento do desenvolvedor por alguns anos e o retorno não tão triunfal ao jogo amargurou um pouco minha visão do mesmo.

Na eterna busca de algo parecido, mas melhor, a aparência semelhante de Courier Beware me cativou de cara.

Muito mais focado em equilibrar passar o tempo treinando suas habilidades, investigar os mistérios da cidade e conseguir dinheiro para pagar aluguel, Courier tem uma jogabilidade simples que acaba parecendo mais um Tamagotchi do que um RPG — mas gostei bastante, mesmo na simplicidade.

O que mais chama a atenção aqui acaba sendo a estética, que exala um charme absurdo. As histórias dos mistérios que explorei são minimalistas, mas servem seu propósito.

Espero apenas que o jogo final tenha um resultado menos amargo do que o de WoH.

Não sei exatamente que coincidência fez com que metade das demos de hoje tivessem essa temática supernatural/de terror, mas gostei. Teve alguma demo que chamou mais sua atenção? Conta pra mim!

Trying to get ahead of the chaos that this coming week will be, I’ve been keeping an eye on the demos released over the last few days to start filtering them. The result: I already have 61 downloaded. Considering that in the last edition I downloaded a total of 103, things are looking a bit dangerous for my free time.

Will I be able to break my record of 125 demos? Will it be possible to balance playing all these demos with keeping up with what promises to be the worst World Cup of all time, thanks to the United Mistakes?

Anyway, just to get into the mood of it all, I decided to write a bit about what I expect from this upcoming edition of the festival, dividing it into three simple categories: wishes, fears, and predictions.

Wishes

One specific request would be to see interesting variations of a genre I’ve been wanting to explore more: city builders and colony sims. Lately, I’ve been trying to get back into RimWorld, a game that already swallowed many hours of my life a few years ago, but I feel like that level of granularity goes a bit beyond what I’m looking for right now.

Another multiplayer game to dive into with my friends would also be very welcome, especially since the last Next Fest brought us the amazing Far Far West. You can never have too many co-op games.

Fears

I think my only real fear is struggling to write and post every day. Anyone who knows me well enough knows that, no matter how hard I try, consistency in creative fields isn’t exactly my strong suit.

In times like these, I’m always reminded of a quote attributed to the artist Chuck Close:

Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike your brain, you're not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself.

While I think that’s easy to say when you’re already an established artist with a steady, well-paced body of work, it’s a valid point — and I’m going to do my best to deliver a proper coverage that matches the quality of the incredible games I’m sure I’ll be testing.

Predictions

I’m going to flood my Steam wishlist with dozens of games that will inevitably have their purchases delayed by other random indies releasing on the exact same day.

Jokes aside, the biggest prediction — one that’s already panning out based on my initial demo scouting — is that games blatantly using AI will be increasingly present. I know this is a losing battle, that it’s a supposedly inevitable progression, and I’m not going to make a value judgment when it comes to AI usage in programming. But for now, I refuse to engage with games that use AI art for their banners, textures, or anything of sorts in the game itself.

It also seems like incremental games are on a rise that makes absolutely no sense to me; over the last few weeks, it felt like a new game in this genre popped up every single day in Steam’s “New and Trending” section. Personally, I don’t see the appeal, but it must be working for someone.

The silly meta-prediction is that this edition's "Golden Demos" [linked article not yet translated, but it’s me doing Oscars-like awards for the previous Next Fest] awards will be packed with crazy categories, with a 2D game winning the "Just Let Me Buy It Already" award.

Regardless of anything, I’m excited about the week ahead. I'm already getting a head start on a few demos and have found some really interesting ones. I hope it stays that way!

Tentando antecipar um pouco da correria desta semana, tenho ficado de olho em demos disponibilizadas nos últimos dias para já ir selecionando algumas. Resultado: tenho 61 baixadas. Se considerarmos que na última edição baixei um total de 103, a situação tá meio perigosa pro meu tempo livre.

Será que conseguirei bater meu recorde de 125 demos? Será possível conciliar jogar essas demos com acompanhar o que promete ser a pior Copa do Mundo de todos os tempos, graças aos Estragos Unidos?

De qualquer forma, para já entrar um pouco no clima, resolvi escrever um pouco sobre o que espero dessa próxima edição do festival, dividindo em três categorias simples: desejos, medos e previsões.

Desejos

Um pedido específico seria ter variações interessantes de um gênero que tenho tido vontade de explorar mais, o de construtores de cidade/gerenciamento de colônia. Recentemente tenho tentado voltar a jogar RimWorld, um jogo que já absorveu muitas horas minhas uns anos atrás, mas sinto que é um nível de granularidade que transcende um pouco o que quero.

Algum outro jogo multijogador para explorar com meus amigos também seria bem-vindo, ainda mais que a última Next Fest nos trouxe o incrível Far Far West. Jogos cooperativos nunca são demais.

Medos

Acho que meu único medo, na verdade, é de que eu tenha dificuldades para escrever e postar todo dia. Quem me conhece sabe que, por mais que eu tente, consistência nas áreas criativas não é um dos meus pontos fortes.

Nessas horas, sempre me recordo de uma citação atribuída ao artista Chuck Close:

Inspiração é para amadores. O resto de nós aparece e faz o trabalho. Se você esperar as nuvens se partirem e um raio atingir seu cérebro, você não vai fazer muita coisa. As melhores ideias vêm do processo; elas vêm do trabalho em si.

Apesar de achar que isso é fácil de falar quando você já é um artista com um corpo de trabalho consolidado, é uma ideia válida — e vou tentar me esforçar ao máximo para fazer uma cobertura fidedigna com a qualidade dos incríveis jogos que com certeza irei testar.

Previsões

Vou encher a minha lista de desejos na Steam com dezenas de jogos que inevitavelmente terão suas compras postergadas por outros indies aleatórios que lançarão no mesmo dia.

Falando sério, a maior previsão que já vem sendo concretizada com base no meu garimpo inicial é a de que jogos utilizando IA de forma descarada estarão cada vez mais presentes. Sei que essa é uma luta impossível de ganhar e que parece um progresso inevitável — e não vou fazer julgamento de valor no campo da programação. Mas, por agora, me recuso a interagir com jogos que façam uso de arte de IA para seus banners ou para texturas e afins nos jogos em si.

Também parece que jogos incrementais estão numa crescente incompreensível para mim; ao longo das últimas semanas, quase todo dia parece que um jogo novo desse gênero aparecia na seção de “novos e em destaque” da Steam. Pessoalmente, não vejo a graça, mas deve estar dando algum resultado.

A meta-previsão boba é de que os prêmios Demos de Ouro dessa edição serão repletos de categorias malucas, com um jogo 2D ganhando na “Me Deixa Comprar Logo”.

Independente de qualquer coisa, tô animado pela semana que está por vir. Já estou adiantando algumas demos e encontrei algumas bem interessantes. Espero que continue assim!

Fact is, I really love games — it’s no wonder I have this newsletter, which I prefer to just call a blog simply because I have zero interest in just announcing news.

Another fact about me, though, is that this love for games also pushes me into that enthusiast territory where I genuinely enjoy watching the various conferences that pop up throughout the months, announcing games and such in an almost infomercial-like vibe.

The week of the late E3 always captivated me — those days were packed with announcements and cringeworthy moments. And it’s that classic thing: it’s always good to find out there’s something cool on the horizon, to build up that anticipation, and get a little boost to survive the dullness of daily life.

For better or worse, E3 is dead. The pandemic and the fragmentation of major publishers hosting their own events contributed heavily to this, but the final blow was delivered by game marketing personified, Geoff Keighley, who created Summer Game Fest, permanently supplanting E3’s centralization.

And here we are! The week of announcements is practically over, with only the Xbox Games Showcase left, which tends to be very hit-or-miss, and the PC Gaming Show, which ends up being a showcase so poorly structured that it’s hardly worth watching (I watch it anyway). I thought this middle ground was a good time to come over here and put together some easy content do a recap of the cool stuff.

The Titans

Leaving aside the fact that these things constantly blur the line between the expected and the leaked, that dopamine rush of seeing something massive being announced and shown always gets me.

It was already a semi-confirmed rumor, but it was really cool to see Resident Evil: Veronica show up right at the beginning of SGF. I’m a big fan of Resident Evil, but I never went back to play Code: Veronica, so there’s an intrinsic curiosity surrounding this remake. Capcom has been killing it recently, so I’m anticipating yet another great game from them.

Curious fact: way before I even thought about putting this game here, the title for this section was “The Bombs,” but I decided to change it to “The Titans” because of the negative connotation of “bomb” [in Portuguese, at least]. Only now did I realize the ridiculous pun with the announcement of Attack on Titan 3.

I know an anime game by Omega Force won’t be a big deal for a lot of people, but I happen to be in the dreadful intersection of being a fan of musou games AND Attack on Titan (no, I don’t think the ending is perfect, but I don’t think it’s entirely bad either).

I’ve wanted to play the other two games for a long time, but their exorbitant prices here in Brazil never allowed it. This one is also expensive, but at least it’s new and covers the whole story. Who knows!

Look at that, Capcom again. With a Nintendo-centric childhood, I started Monster Hunter a bit later than the standard for such an enthusiast of the hobby, but earlier than most people: with the charming Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii. Since then, the franchise has been one of my favorites, with hundreds of hours poured into every game released since.

Monster Hunter Wilds is, by far, the game I dislike the most out of the ones I’ve played in the franchise. Between being terribly optimized, way too easy, and forcing you through several sections of slow walking and talking, Wilds only cemented further that the main MH team has completely lost themselves in the AAA melting pot.

The trailer for this expansion didn’t do much to sway me from that opinion, even offering a glimpse of some new mechanic they’re going to force on us. With any luck, it won’t be as annoying as Iceborne’s clutch claw.

Watching CONTROL Resonant, I can only sigh lovingly, "Ah, Remedy." It should be illegal for a company to be this adorable. Okay, it’s not exactly the company; it’s mostly Sam Lake. But this collective is capable of providing me with brilliant games AND this:

I’m a more recent fan, having played Alan Wake not long before Control launched on Steam, but I found myself completely captured by the insanity of these people. The games have their flaws, but they usually offer enjoyable gameplay and interesting narratives.

Even though Control is my least favorite of the three games I’ve played, the meta-narrative developed between it, the various files scattered throughout the game, and the overall package of Alan Wake 2 leaves me quite excited to see what Remedy has planned and how Resonant will surpass its predecessor.

I’m not a die-hard fan of Silent Hill — to this day, I’ve only played Silent Hill f (and loved it) — but the franchise’s aesthetic and style have always caught my attention. I plan to marathon the other games eventually, and I will.

In the meantime, however, Konami is moving steadily forward with the revitalization of the franchise, with another outsourced game locked and loaded: Silent Hill: Townfall. I’m not a huge fan of first-person horror games, but my recent experience with f gives me the motivation to try these new projects in the franchise.

I remember seeing a lot of cool stuff about Guild Wars when I was a kid, but I only got around to playing it this past year, taking advantage of the Reforged release. For completely random reasons, though, I bought Guild Wars 2 at launch and played a good amount of it on and off over the years.

I’m not big on MMOs, but Guild Wars games have something special. Whether it’s the almost single-player RPG nature of the original, with the possibility of creating varied and interesting builds, or the incredible, fluid exploration of its sequel, the franchise always seems to introduce something that breaks away from the genre’s norms.

When Guild Wars 3 showed up at SGF, my eyes lit up. It’s still a long way off; the beta isn’t until late 2027… But I can’t wait to see what ArenaNet has planned.

Notable Indies

Even if they aren’t the main focus or what most of the audience wants to see at these events, it’s indisputable that indies serve an essential role: providing even more trailers and ideas that deviate from the AAA standard.

Some already have demos available on Steam, so I’ll leave those to discuss during the Next Fest posts, but these next two deserve a little spotlight.

Even though the gameplay of MR. RECORDS doesn't look that engaging as a rhythm game, the brief snippet of the soundtrack we hear in the trailer completely won me over. In the end, that’s just about all that matters for a game of this genre.

I think fighting games are cool, but I admit I lack the dedication to play enough and actually learn the nuances. I’ve ventured a few dozen hours into various Street Fighters, Guilty Gears, and the like, but never that deep.

Shot One Fighters comes with the premise of being a roguelite fighting game where you choose your moves as upgrades. It seems like a solid pick for those who, like me, don’t quite find their footing in the genre.

I still haven’t played 1000xRESIST, the cult favorite that looks brilliantly weird, but this new game from the same developers seems pretty cool.

Prove You’re Human promises to tackle a current topic — our relationship with AI — in a creepy and interesting way. It’s highly likely I’ll buy the game and take ages to actually play it, as usual, but I’m eager to see if they can pack another hit.

Weird Stuff

As I’ve said on another occasion, I like Yakuza, but I’m far from being a dedicated fan. I finished 0 and Kiwami, got about 25% into Kiwami 2, and ended up dropping it.

For a while, I used to get excited to see what RGG Studio was doing. After the release of 0, the studio seemed incapable of missing. Western re-releases, interesting remakes, and later the drastic yet cool genre shift in the last two mainline games. Unfortunately, recent years have been rough on fans, with many complaints regarding story alterations in the remake of 3, which apparently features some pretty unnecessary changes.

At Summer Game Fest, the studio decided to outdo themselves: they announced a large part of the cast for Stranger than Heaven, which already included the notorious sellout Snoop Dogg, wrapping things up bombastically with the inclusion of none other than Tupac.

Yes, Tupac.

While I understand there is another deceased actor being digitized for the game (Bunta Sugawara) and that pointing out Tupac specifically borders on hypocrisy, there’s a lot of nuance involved. Tupac’s family doesn’t control his image, the artist died young and violently, and — what bothers me most — he has virtually no relevance to the theme, eras, or locations of the game.

I don’t know, I find the whole thing messed up. Ideally, no one should be digitized just to appear in a game, movie, or whatever, whether it’s Tupac, Bunta Sugawara, or Toshiro Mifune in Onimusha.

As a Gundam fan, I’m mixed on Gundam Rogue Orbit. On one hand, the fact that it has "rogue" in the title and isn't a roguelite is quite pleasant. On the other hand, the designs of everything that appeared are so "meh" that I don't know.

Seriously though, the little we saw of the game makes it look okay and potentially the first genuinely halfway-decent game in the franchise in a long time. I don’t want to be a grumpy old man who never wants anything different, so I’ll give the game a chance — especially if you can customize that awful color on the Gundam Helix.

But these mechanical designs don’t excite me in the slightest, to the point where I was joking while watching, saying it was just another game copying classic design elements just to coast a bit on brand recognition. I didn’t want to believe that this V-Fin (the V-shaped horn on the head) was anything more than a silly reference, but here we are.

Let’s see how it turns out. Many of the coolest properties in the franchise are the ones that do things completely differently, so who knows.

Overall, I think this year’s Summer Game Fest and the smaller conferences around it were pretty average, as usual.

Plenty of interesting games in the indie scene, many of which I avoided mentioning here since I already have the demos downloaded to test. A lot of hype coming from AAA productions, without much substance.

Fato é, gosto muito de games — não à toa tenho essa newsletter, que prefiro chamar de blog simplesmente porque não tenho interesse nenhum em ficar só anunciando novidades.

Um outro fato sobre mim, porém, é que esse meu gosto por games também faz com que eu entre naquele campo de entusiasta que gosta muito de assistir às várias conferências que surgem ao longo dos meses, anunciando jogos e afins numa vibe quase canal de vendas.

A semana da finada E3 sempre foi algo que me cativou muito — eram dias recheados de novidades e momentos constrangedores. E é aquela coisa: é sempre bom descobrir que tem algo legal vindo por aí, criar aquela expectativa e dar um pequeno gás para sobreviver às chatices do dia a dia.

Bom ou ruim, a E3 morreu. A pandemia e a fragmentação de grandes publishers fazendo seus próprios eventos contribuíram muito para isso, mas o golpe final foi que o marketing de jogos personificado, Geoff Keighley, criou a Summer Game Fest, suplantando de vez a centralização da E3.

E cá estamos! A semana de anúncios está praticamente encerrada, faltando apenas a XBOX Games Showcase, que costuma ser bem 8 ou 80, e a PC Gaming Show, que acaba sendo uma coletânea tão mal estruturada que dificilmente compensa assistir (assisto mesmo assim). Achei esse meio termo um bom momento para vir aqui e fazer um conteúdo fácil uma recapitulação de coisas legais.

Os titãs

Desconsiderando que essas coisas transitam entre o esperado e o vazado, aquela dopamina de ver algo grande sendo anunciado e demonstrado sempre me pega.

Já tava como um rumor semi-confirmado, mas foi muito legal ver Resident Evil Veronica aparecer logo no início do SGF. Gosto bastante de Resident Evil, mas nunca voltei para jogar Code Veronica então tem uma curiosidade intrínseca em torno desse remake. A Capcom tem arrasado nos últimos anos, então antecipo mais um jogão por parte deles.

Fato curioso: bem antes de pensar em colocar esse jogo aqui, o título para essa seção era “as bombas”, aí resolvi mudar para “os titãs” pela conotação negativa de bomba. Só agora pensei nesse trocadilho ridículo com o anúncio de Attack on Titan 3.

Sei que um jogo de anime da Omega Force não vai ser algo foda pra muita gente, mas estou na tenebrosa intersecção de ser fã de musous E de Attack on Titan (não, não acho o final perfeito, mas também não acho de todo ruim).

Faz tempo que quero jogar os outros dois jogos, mas o preço exorbitante deles aqui no Brasil nunca permitiu. Esse também tá caro, mas pelo menos é novo e cobre a história toda. Quem sabe!

Olha só, Capcom de novo. Com uma infância nintendista, comecei no Monster Hunter um pouco depois do que o padrão para alguém tão entusiasta do hobby, mas antes do que a maioria das pessoas: com o charmoso Monster Hunter Tri para Wii. Desde então, a franquia vem sendo uma das minhas favoritas, com centenas de horas em todos os jogos lançados desde então.

Monster Hunter Wilds é, de longe, o jogo que mais desgosto dos que joguei da franquia. Entre ser terrivelmente otimizado, ser fácil demais e ainda te forçar a passar por várias seções caminhando lentamente e conversando, Wilds só cimentou ainda mais que a equipe principal de MH se perdeu muito no personagem.

O trailer dessa expansão não fez muito para me desincentivar dessa opinião, com direito até a mostrar um vislumbre de alguma mecânica nova que vão forçar na gente. Com sorte, não vai ser algo tão irritante quanto a clutch claw do Iceborne.

Vendo CONTROL Resonant, só consigo suspirar amavelmente “ah, Remedy.” Devia ser proibido uma empresa ser tão adorável. Tá, não é bem a empresa, é o Sam Lake. Mas esse coletivo é capaz de me proporcionar jogos fodas E isso:

Não sou um fã de carteirinha de Silent Hill — até hoje, joguei apenas o Silent Hill f (e adorei) — mas a estética e estilo da franquia sempre me chamou muita atenção. Tenho planos de maratonar os outros jogos e eventualmente farei isso.

Enquanto isso, no entanto, a Konami segue firme na revitalização da franquia, com outro jogo terceirizado no gatilho: Silent Hill: Townfall. Não sou tão chegado em jogos de terror em primeira pessoa, mas minha experiência recente com o f me dá um gás para experimentar esses novos projetos da franquia.

Lembro de ver muita coisa maneira sobre Guild Wars quando era moleque, mas só fui jogá-lo nesse último ano, aproveitando o lançamento do Reforged. Por motivos aleatórios, porém, comprei Guild Wars 2 no lançamento e joguei bastante dele espaçado ao longo dos anos.

Não sou tão chegado em MMOs, mas os Guild Wars têm algo especial. Seja a natureza quase RPG singleplayer do original, com a possibilidade de criar builds variadas e interessantes, ou a exploração incrível e fluida de sua sequência, a franquia parece sempre introduzir algo que foge do comum para o gênero.

Quando Guild Wars 3 apareceu no SGF, meu olhinho brilhou. Está bem longe, o beta vai ser só no final de 2027… Mas mal posso esperar para ver o que a ArenaNet tem planejado.

Indies notáveis

Mesmo não sendo o foco ou o que boa parte do público quer ver nesses eventos, é indiscutível que os indies servem um papel essencial: providenciar ainda mais trailers e ideias diferentes do padrão AAA.

Alguns já estão com demos na Steam, então deixarei para falar deles durante as postagens da Next Fest, mas esses próximos dois mereciam um destaquezinho.

Apesar da jogabilidade de MR. RECORDS não parecer tão engajante enquanto jogo de ritmo, o pouco da trilha que vemos no trailer me conquistou demais. No fim, é meio que tudo que importa para um jogo do tipo.

Acho jogos de luta legais, mas admito que me falta um pouco de empenho pra jogar o suficiente e aprender as nuances. Já me aventurei algumas dezenas de horas em vários Street Fighters, Guilty Gears e afins, mas nunca tão a fundo.

Shot One Fighters vem com a ideia de ser um jogo de luta roguelite no qual você escolhe seus golpes como aprimoramentos. Parece uma boa pedida para aqueles que, como eu, não se encontram no gênero.

Ainda não joguei 1000xRESIST, queridinho cult que parece ser genialmente estranho, mas esse novo jogo dos mesmos desenvolvedores parece ser bem maneiro.

Prove You’re Human promete abordar um tema atual — nosso relacionamento com inteligências artificiais — de forma assustadora e interessante. É bem capaz que eu compre o jogo e demore para jogá-lo, como de praxe, mas estou ansioso para ver se conseguirão embalar outro sucesso.

Coisas estranhas

Como já disse em outra ocasião, gosto de Yakuza, mas estou longe de ser fã assíduo. Terminei o 0 e o Kiwami, cheguei nos 25% do Kiwami 2 e acabei não dando continuidade.

Relançamentos no ocidente, remakes interessantes, e depois a mudança drástica, porém legal, de gênero nos últimos dois jogos principais. Infelizmente, os últimos anos têm sido cruéis para os fãs, com muitas reclamações sobre as alterações de história no remake do 3, que aparentemente tem mudanças bem desnecessárias.

Na Summer Game Fest, o estúdio resolveu se superar: anunciaram boa parte do elenco de Stranger than Heaven, que já incluía o notório Snoop Dogg, finalizando bombasticamente com a inclusão de ninguém mais, ninguém menos do que Tupac.

Sim, o Tupac.

Apesar de entender que tem outro ator falecido sendo digitalizado para o jogo (Bunta Sugawara) e que apontar especificamente o Tupac beira a hipocrisia, tem muita nuance envolvida nisso. A família do Tupac não controla a imagem dele, o artista morreu cedo e violentamente, e — o que mais me incomoda — ele não tem praticamente nenhuma relevância com a temática, as eras ou os locais do jogo.

Sei lá, acho tudo isso bem zoado. Idealmente, ninguém seria digitalizado simplesmente para aparecer num joguinho, filme ou seja lá o que, seja o Tupac, o Bunta Sugawara ou o Toshiro Mifune no Onimusha.

Como um fã de Gundam, estou misto quanto a Gundam Rogue Orbit. Por um lado, o fato de ter rogue no nome e não ser um roguelite é bem agradável. Por outro lado, os designs de tudo que apareceu são tão blé que, sei lá.

Falando sério, o pouco do jogo que vimos faz ele parecer ok e potencialmente o primeiro jogo realmente minimamente bom da franquia em muito tempo. Não quero ser um velho chatão que nunca quer algo diferente, então darei uma chance para o jogo — ainda mais se der pra customizar essa cor terrível do Gundam Helix.

Mas esses designs mecânicos não me empolgam nem um pouco, ao ponto de que estava zoando enquanto assistia, falando que era mais um jogo copiando elementos clássicos de design só para surfar um tico no reconhecimento. Não quis acreditar que esse V-Fin (o chifre em V na cabeça) era algo além de uma referência boba, mas cá estamos.

Vamos ver como vai ser. Muitas das propriedades mais legais da franquia são aquelas que são bem diferentes, então sei lá.

No geral, acho que esse ano a Summer Game Fest e as conferências menores ao redor foram bem medianas, como de praxe.

Muitos jogos interessantes no campo indie, muitos que evitei citar aqui por já estar com as demos baixadas para testar. Muito hype por parte de produções AAA, sem muita substância.

Nope, just stubbornness.

Before games like Spelunky and Binding of Isaac exploded onto the indie scene — setting off a chain reaction of consumers remembering that pick-up-and-play/arcade games are a great way to have more contained experiences with a beginning, middle, and end, and developers realizing that if you randomize a good chunk of how your content is distributed, you can technically cut your workload considerably — roguelike was a pretty specific term for games that… well, that were like Rogue.

Rogue, for the uninitiated, is an almost prehistoric game from 1980: a turn-based RPG featuring exploration of a dungeon that reshuffles its layout and challenges every run through procedural generation, permadeath, and charming ASCII graphics.

Strip out that last part, and it sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Well, as if the similarities weren't enough, Rogue had its own ripple effect, drawing in computer nerds to create games like Hack and Moria, which would eventually give rise to other giants of the genre that endure to this day: NetHack and Angband. In the niche circles where these games circulated, a term started emerging to identify them more precisely: roguelikes.

After the aforementioned wave of indie games from 2008 onward, a new term began popping up: roguelites. The idea was that these games had enough of the original spirit — specifically procedural generation and permadeath — but were different enough that the old term didn't quite fit. Many, for instance, don't use turn-based action and feature some kind of upgrade system between runs… and so on.

Things start getting complicated when the internet and people, being what they are, begin claiming the original term and using it indiscriminately to refer to games like Risk of Rain, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon… Fair enough, that's how vocabularies work, and neologisms are an inevitable facet of society.

Roguelikes became games without meta-progression, roguelites became games with meta-progression, and then they invented the term "traditional roguelikes" to refer to the old-school stuff… But I, Raphael, use roguelike for the traditional ones and roguelite for the modern ones. And in this space of mine, that's the law!

Given all that context, it might be clear that defining exactly what a roguelite is can get pretty tricky. Beyond some randomness through procedural generation and permadeath, these games can have a vast array of mechanics. There are roguelites that emulate metroidvanias, and others that are rhythm games. You can't generalize.

Despite usually preferring roguelikes, it's hard to deny that roguelites have been winning me over through the years, largely because of how ubiquitous the genre has become. I don't know, there's something great about booting up a game and knowing you can reach the end of the experience, win or lose, in a fraction of the time it takes to finish most other games. The fact that these games tend to have little things to unlock and encourage more runs helps a lot too.

It feels a little silly to talk about commitment to a hobby of all things, but long games tend to haunt me. A while back, I started Lies of P. In my experience, it's an incredible game — but after getting roughly halfway through, I hit a wall and simply never picked it back up. I've got 18 hours in it with no intention of returning anytime soon, just because I know it would take roughly another 20 hours to finish it.

Is it irrational to think that way while simultaneously playing, hypothetically, twenty one-hour sessions of some random game like Cursed Words? Yeah, I'd say so. But I can't help it!

Honestly, it's so difficult to discuss roguelites as a genre outside the historical and contextual angle that I think it's much more productive to just recommend a few I enjoy, with a focus on variety in gameplay.

Gunfire Reborn

When Gunfire showed up in 2021 in early access, trailing weird comments like “it’s basically Borderlands but roguelite,” I got pretty excited about the game’s potential. I played one solo session and immediately told my friends, “I think I found our new game.” Sure enough, I’ve got nearly 200 hours in it.

With a really enjoyable gameplay loop, Gunfire Reborn currently boasts a diverse roster of characters, an absurd pile of strange weapons, and plenty of things to unlock over time, all at a pretty accessible price even outside of sales.

My only disappointment is that the developers focused on releasing characters, weapons, and random mechanics through a “seasons” system rather than expanding map variety — but the diversity already in the game was enough to keep us entertained for a few years.

It’s a solid solo game, but it’s much more fun with friends.

Monster Train 2

A deckbuilding roguelite was inevitable, right? Easily one of the most popular subgenres in the roguelite space, deckbuilders are games where the player has to overcome challenges while shaping their card deck.

I think we can all agree that Slay the Spire is the roguelite deckbuilder, with a staggering range of possibilities and a balancing process so extensive that its sequel — currently in early access — is being buried in negative reviews because of the changes in every update.

But my personal favorite has always been Monster Train, with its peculiar take on tower defense elements. Instead of controlling a character whose actions are cards, the focus is on unit cards with varied abilities, which you can place on one of three floors of your train with the goal of protecting the train’s pyre from enemies arriving in waves. You also have access to various spell cards, cards that upgrade units or rooms, and so on.

The first game was already good, but the second is a sensational iteration that eclipses the original. Bonus points: it has a soundtrack I really like, packed with great tracks.

The Void Rains Upon Her Heart

One of the most pleasant surprises I stumbled upon while hunting for “hidden gem” recommendations, The Void Rains Upon Her Heart is a roguelite shmup (shoot ‘em up). Since shmups are traditionally arcade games and roguelites are something of an arcade revival, it’s a pairing that works really well.

Beyond the excellent gameplay, weird aesthetics, and great music, The Void uses its bullet hell framing — a term for games that focus on dodging large numbers of projectiles — to tell an obtuse but somewhat interesting story.

The real draw, though, is the sheer variety of challenges: the game boils down to a sequence of bosses to defeat, each with a different rhythm of attacks and movement patterns. In the most recent update, from May 2026, the total enemy count sits at 113, and even accounting for the fact that they’re grouped into about a dozen similar categories with variations, that’s an impressive number.

Add to that 779 challenges to chase down, and the game is a complete package for anyone into this kind of thing.

Time Break Chronicles

Another game I stumbled upon randomly while browsing Steam sales, Time Break Chronicles aims to distill the JRPG experience down to combat, using classes and characters with entirely different abilities.

What I find most interesting about this game is the staggering number of characters: 100 to unlock and level up. This gives players a huge number of team combinations to experiment with across runs.

The writing isn’t great, but it’s sparse enough, and the game takes itself about as seriously as you’d expect from something that lets you pair a biker with the Sasquatch — making it a lean, enjoyable experience.

One caveat: the game is still in early access, and the last update was a few months ago. The forums discuss a personal emergency that came up with the developer, but there’s been no official communication about it. There’s enough content here to last for dozens of hours, but still, buyer beware.

So many roguelites come out every year that it’s hard to keep track of them all. At the upcoming Steam Next Fest, I’ll probably play and wishlist a bunch more.

Não, é teimosia mesmo.

Antes de jogos como Spelunky e Binding of Isaac explodirem na cena indie, desencadeando um efeito cascata com consumidores lembrando que jogos pick up and play/arcade são um ótimo jeito de ter experiências mais comedidas com começo, meio e fim, e desenvolvedores percebendo que se você aleatoriza boa parte de como seu conteúdo é distribuído, dá para tecnicamente diminuir consideravelmente sua carga de trabalho, roguelike era um termo bem específico para jogos que… Bem, que eram como Rogue.

Rogue, para os não tão íntimos, é um jogo quase jurássico de 1980: um RPG com ação em turnos, exploração de uma masmorra que muda seu layout e desafios a cada aventura com geração procedural, morte permanente e charmosos gráficos em ASCII.

Tirando essa última parte, parece familiar?

Bem, como se as similaridades já não fossem suficientes, Rogue teve seu próprio efeito cascata, cativando nerds de computação a criar jogos como Hack e Moria, que posteriormente resultariam em outros gigantes do gênero que perduram até hoje: NetHack e Angband. Nos círculos nichados onde esses jogos tramitavam, foi surgindo um termo para identificá-los mais apropriadamente: roguelikes (literalmente, “parecidos com Rogue”).

Após a supracitada enxurrada de jogos indie de 2008 pra frente, um novo termo começou a surgir por aí: roguelites (literalmente, “Rogue light”). A ideia era que esses jogos tinham elementos suficientes do espírito original, em específico a geração procedural e a morte permanente, mas também eram diferentes a ponto de que o termo não cabia tanto. Muitos, por exemplo, não têm ação em turnos, possuem algum sistema de upgrades entre as jogatinas… Por aí vai.

A situação começa a ficar complicada quando a internet e as pessoas, sendo o que são, passam a se reapropriar do termo original, usando-o indiscriminadamente para se referir a jogos como Risk of Rain, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon… Tudo bem, é assim que vocabulários funcionam e neologismos são uma faceta inevitável da sociedade.

Roguelikes viraram jogos sem meta progressão, roguelites jogos com meta progressão, inventaram o termo de roguelikes tradicionais para falar dos jogos com estilo antigo… Mas eu, Raphael, uso roguelike para os tradicionais e roguelite para os que são diferentes — e ao menos nesse meu espaço, essa é a lei!

Dado todo esse contexto, talvez fique claro que é meio difícil definir exatamente o que é um roguelite. Tirando um pouco de aleatoriedade por intermédio de geração procedural e mortes permanentes, os jogos podem ter qualquer roupagem mecânica. Tem roguelites que emulam metroidvanias, enquanto outros são jogos de ritmo. Não é possível generalizar.

Apesar de normalmente preferir roguelikes, é difícil negar que os roguelites foram me conquistando ao longo dos anos — muito por conta da ubiquidade do gênero. Sei lá, tem algo ótimo em abrir um jogo e saber que você consegue alcançar o fim da experiência — seja na derrota ou na vitória — numa fração do tempo necessário para terminar boa parte dos outros jogos. Esses jogos também comumente têm coisinhas para desbloquear e isso incentiva mais jogatinas, também.

É meio idiota falar sobre comprometimento com um hobby, mas jogos extensos tendem a me assombrar. Algum tempo atrás, comecei Lies of P. Na minha experiência, é um jogo incrível, mas após chegar mais ou menos na metade, saturei e simplesmente não peguei o jogo para terminar. Estou com 18 horas de jogo, sem intenção de retomar no futuro próximo, simplesmente porque sei que isso demoraria por volta de mais umas 20 horas.

É irracional pensar isso e, ao mesmo tempo, jogar, hipoteticamente, vinte sessões de 1 hora de um jogo aleatório como Cursed Words? Sim, diria que sim. Mas é mais forte do que eu!

Sendo sincero, é tão difícil falar de roguelites enquanto gênero fora do aspecto histórico e contextual que acho bem mais produtivo só recomendar alguns roguelites que gosto, focando na diversidade de jogabilidade.

Gunfire Reborn

Quando Gunfire surgiu em 2021 com comentários estranhos de “é tipo Borderlands só que roguelite”, em acesso antecipado, fiquei bem empolgado com o potencial do jogo. Joguei uma vez solo e logo já soltei para meus amigos: “acho que encontrei um jogo novo pra gente.” Dito e feito, já que tenho quase 200 horas no jogo.

Com uma jogabilidade bem agradável, atualmente Gunfire Reborn tem uma gama bem diversa de personagens, um punhado absurdo de armas estranhas e várias coisinhas para desbloquear ao longo do tempo, tudo por um preço bem acessível mesmo fora de promoções.

Minha única decepção é que os desenvolvedores focaram em lançar personagens, armas e mecânicas aleatórias num sistema de “temporadas” ao invés de aumentar a variedade de mapas, mas a diversidade presente no jogo foi o suficiente para nos divertir por alguns anos.

É um bom jogo para jogar sozinho, mas ele é bem mais interessante quando jogado com amigos.

Monster Train 2

Não tinha como faltar um roguelite de cartinhas, né? De longe um dos subgêneros mais populares no campo dos roguelites, deckbuilders são jogos nos quais o jogador tem que ir superando os desafios enquanto molda seu baralho de cartas.

Acho que podemos admitir que Slay the Spire é O deckbuilder roguelite, com uma variedade absurda de possibilidades e um processo de balanceamento tão extenso que a sequência, atualmente em acesso antecipado, está sofrendo muitas avaliações negativas por conta das mudanças em cada atualização.

Mas meu xodó sempre foi Monster Train, com sua peculiar adoção de elementos do gênero de tower defense. Aqui, ao invés de controlar um personagem e ter ações como cartas, o foco está em cartas de unidades com habilidades variadas, podendo alocá-las em um dos três andares do seu trem, visando proteger a pira do trem dos inimigos que vão surgindo em ondas. Também temos acesso a cartas variadas de magia, cartas para melhorar unidades ou salas e por aí vai.

O primeiro jogo já era bom, mas o segundo é uma iteração sensacional que eclipsa o jogo original. De bônus, também tem uma trilha sonora que gosto bastante, cheia de músicas fodas.

Uma das mais gratas surpresas que tive procurando recomendações de “gemas escondidas”, The Void Rains Upon Her Heart é um roguelite shmup (shoot ‘em up ou atire neles, literalmente). Sendo que shmups são tradicionalmente jogos arcade e roguelites são a ressurgência de jogos arcade, é uma mistura que funciona muito bem.

Além da jogabilidade, estética e música fodas, The Void usa sua roupagem enquanto bullet hell (“inferno de balas”, para descrever jogos do tipo com um foco em desviar de um número grande de projéteis) para contar uma história obtusa, mas minimamente interessante.

Mas o foco, de verdade, está na enorme variedade de desafios: o jogo se resume em uma sequência de chefões para derrotar, cada um com um ritmo diferente de ataques e movimentação. Na atualização mais recente, de maio de 2026, o total de inimigos está em 113 — mesmo considerando que eles são categorizados em uma dúzia de categorias similares com variações entre si, é um número impressionante.

Soma-se ainda a quantidade de desafios para correr atrás, em 779, e o jogo é um pacote completo para quem tem interesse nesse tipo de aventura.

Time Break Chronicles

Outro jogo que achei aleatoriamente procurando coisas durante promoções da Steam, Time Break Chronicles busca condensar a experiência de um JRPG para o combate usando classes e personagens com habilidades completamente diferentes.

O que acho mais interessante nesse jogo é a quantidade absurda de personagens, com 100 para desbloquear e incrementar, possibilitando ao jogador uma quantidade bem grande de combinações de equipes para usar nas sessões.

A escrita não é das melhores, mas o jogo se leva tão a sério quanto o esperado para algo que te permite unir um motoqueiro com o Pé-grande — sendo assim uma experiência enxuta e agradável.

Fica, no entanto, a ressalva de que o jogo continua em acesso antecipado e a última atualização tem alguns meses. Vi que aparentemente ocorreu alguma emergência com o desenvolvedor, mas não houve comunicação oficial sobre isso. Tem conteúdo suficiente para durar dezenas de horas, mas mesmo assim, atenção para compradores.

Saem tantos roguelites no ano que fica até complicado mantê-los elencados na mente. Na Steam Next Fest que está por vir, provavelmente vou jogar e colocar na lista de desejos mais um punhado enorme.
